Description: Chiefly photographs of Ireland and New Zealand (particularly Auckland). Appears to have been compiled by an Irish officer with the Imperial forces during the 1860s. Among the New Zealand views are photographs taken by John Kinder and Lieutenant-Colonel J H Rocke, 18th Royal Irish Regiment Photographs of people are not identified in the album, but have been identified by comparison with other photographs, and include Judge William Martin and his wife, and Governor Gore Browne and his family. Description: Shows a view across foreground trees and fern, to the buildings of St John's College and its surrounding garden. Part of the curved driveway is visible past the trees. The chapel is to the left on the horizon beyond the college buildings, and the wardens' house is on the far right. The tree at the far right may be a large weeping willow. Perspective lines are drawn across the tops the the roofs or the college and through the garden. Notes on the image indicate "fern" and "light green"; probably notes for a later painting. Other Titles - St John's Inscriptions: Recto - beneath image - [Title] Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Sepia wash over pencil on paper, 258 x 364 mm. Provenance: The work was originally in a scrapbook (Album 2, leaf 16 recto) purchased from a second-hand shop in Auckland in the 1950s by Mr Harry Rodewald of Auckland (Vendor catalogue, Spring 2006). Dismounted and sold separately with other Kinder drawings in the early 1980s.
