Description: View of tents and wagons in the valley of Gabriel's Gully, the first site where gold was discovered (by Buchanan) in Otago. There is a very similar early photograph of Gabriel's Gully in the Hocken Library. James Hector wrote on this trip about the appearance of New Zealand bush in the Matukituki area and how well the trees could adapt to be specimen trees in European garden settings.
