There is a chapter on old-time racing, including the days before the book-maker was banned. There are also references to visiting celebrities, among them Mark Twain, Frank Bullen and Paderewski, and memories of many theatrical shows. Included is a summary of the career of the late Henry Hayward, a pioneer in cinema entertainment in NZ. Description: The schedule of owners of land in the Wainui-o-mata District include some of the earliest settlers in Wellington region; among the owners in 1854 were William Swainson, William Fitzherbert and Edward Jerningham Wakefield. Description: The reminiscences mainly concentrate on the period 1842 to 1878 and were dictated to members of his family during the latter part of 1908 and beginning of 1909. They give details of White's mothers family and his father's career as a midshipman. They then go on to describe White's career in New Zealand first as a surveyor in the Horokiwi and Wellington areas, a farmer at Mohunoa (Kapiti) and Wainuiomata, in the volunteer forces which fought against Te Rangiatea, his visits to Auckland and then his later career in Mongonui [Mangonui] holding various government posts including work for the Land Commissioner. The reminiscences give White's impressions of relations between Maori and settler especially in the greater Wellington/Kapiti and Maunganui districts and recount many incidents involving such people as Te Rauparaha, Governor Grey, Fitzroy, McLean, Hadfield and many others. Description: Contains notes about places associated with Kupe in Wellington and Wairarapa, whakapapa, financial records by Tuta Nihoniho and miscellaneous notes about land management There is a lengthy account of the destruction of the Te Arawa canoe by Raumati, and subsequent events, and a related narrative about Raumati's son, Ngarue and his activites and family There are haka and waiata, a list of pa in Taranaki and related iwi, notes about the origins and settlements of various iwi, notes about greenstone, and a narrative about conflicts between Te Ati Awa and Waikato, and the subsequent migration of Te Ati Awa along with Ngati Raukawa and Ngati Toa to the Wellington area There are notes about the arrival of Pakeha in New Zealand before Captain Cook, and a note in Elsdon Best's hand that states that much of the information in the manuscript was extracted from the Journal of the Polynesian Society and other published sources Also contains the names of several muskets belonging to the Ngati Toa which were named in a waiata composed by the wife of Te Pukoro, a Ngati Tama/ Ati Awa chief killed in the Wairarapa in the late 1820s.
