A small hut at the water's edge nearby, swampy ground and the Waitangi Stream in the foreground, fencing marking Te Aro Pa, European houses beyond, cliffs marking the beginning of Lambton Quay with houses running its length at the waterfront, the sloping line of The Terrace, with several houses running up the hill in the left background and ships moored in the harbour. Description: A rough sketch with a view from Thorndon, looking towards Lambton Quay, and Te Aro, with Government House and its flagpole in the foreground, the waterfront (Lambton Quay) with several houses visible, Clay Point indicated and Mount Cook beyond it, with the Barracks. Bush with either tree ferns or cabbage trees is indicated in the near foreground. There are three ships in the harbour Attribution: attributed by the Library on cataloguing, 1980, to H J Warre. However the handwriting is not that of Warre, and the style appears less precise than his. This is one of four drawings in the same hand, with the same provenance, (A-172-013 to -016) one of which appears to be a preliminary drawing for a watercolour by Colonel C E Gold. Description: View from Clay Point hill above the junction of modern Willis St and Lambton Quay. The beach in the foreground is lower Willis Street, while upper Willis Street passes up the rise on the far right. The beach in the background is modern Mercer and Wakefield Streets. Cows, goats, two Maori canoes, a couple on horseback and Bethune & Hunter's Stores are in the foreground, with a jetty and sailing ships in the harbour. Further jetties and public and private buildings are in the background on Te Aro Flat. The most prominent building along the waterfront, with a Grecian-style frontage, is the Exchange Building. Mounts Cook, Albert and Victoria are indicated in the skyline above their relevant peaks. From water-colour by Charles Heaphy; engraver unknown. For a key to the identity of individual buildings, see negative 15576 1/2. T. M. Hocken's 'Key plan of Heaphy's View of a part of the town of Wellington ... 1885'. The original for this key is in the Hocken Library Pictures Collection. A watercolour was the original for the lithograph of the same title, published in London in 1842. There were also later prints from the same stone produced during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. See reference number C-026-002 for copies of the lithograph. Description: Views of Wellington between 1842 and 1845. The top view shows the house of William Wakefield (the site of the Beehive) looking up The Terrace beyond. The central view is of Captain Daniell's sawmill on the Kaiwharawhara stream. A bullock cart is carrying logs to the right, several men are resting in the foreground, there are piles of tree trunks in the foreground, and tall bush in the background. The lowest view shows the bank on the corner of Willis Street and Manners Street with soldiers marching by, from the barracks next door to the bank. Description: Shows three scenes of the hazards of a race through Wellington's streets. In the first a race organiser is explaining that because of the council worker's strike which has resulted in piles of rubbish bags on the streets, the race will be a hurdle race. In the second scene a contestant is doing a 'water jump' over the Manners Mall fountain. In the third scene a contestant is lying on the ground after being hit by a demolition ball when he was running past a demolition site. Refers to the construction boom in central Wellington in the 1980s.
