Shows the Hutt District and part of the Harbour District and the Lowry Bay District. Each district is divided into numbered 100-acre blocks, listing owner's names, including: Molesworth, Watt, Child, Capt. Daniell, Hanson, Hunter, Wicksteed, Capt. Smith, Catchpool, Dr Evans, Kettle, St. Hill, Alzdorf, Riddiford, Stokes, Bidwell, Duppa, G Robins, J Forbes, W Tod, E Dunlop, D Grant, A Tennant, Hart, Partridge, Wieford, Parke, Bevans, Col. Description: Cadastral map showing the boundaries of the Port Nicholson Purchase, or the 'first purchase of the New Zealand Company, as laid down by Mr Thomas Fitzgerald, assistant surveyor attached to the Land Claims Commissioner and by the officers of the New Zealand Company's surveying staff'. Land involved includes over one hundred 100-acre land blocks in the Wellington Region, namely in Upper and Lower Hutt, Lowry Bay, the Miramar Peninsular, coastal land on the eastern coast of the harbour, Orongo rongo, Petone, Pakuratahi, the Wainuiomata Valley, Tawa, and some blocks of land westwards of Tawa, Johnsonville, and Karori. The map names the following districts: Terawhiti, Kinapora, Makara, Kaiwara, Ohiro, Horokiwi Road, Karori, Town, Ohariu, Harbour, Evan's Bay, Lowry Bay, Upper Hutt, Lower Hutt. Valley of Wainuiomata, Pakuratahi, Petone, and each district is divided into numbered blocks. Several sites have Maori or English names. 'Pa Rangi rau' is indicated near Barings Head. Some topographical detail is shown. Miramar is named 'Watt's Peninsular' and includes a large lake called 'Burnham Water'. The map does not include the central business district of Wellington. Before copying, map was signed 'No 12, Case 374, Plan of the Port Nicholson District referred to in my final report [signed] Will[ia]m Spain, Commissioner'. The original map colour coding referred to government, Native (Maori) and public (town) belt reserves, not visible on this black and white copy. Description: Cadastral map of country sections bordering the Orewenua and Manawatu Districts between the Manawatu River and Lake Orewenua, highlighting in yellow 36 Maori reserves on numbered sections (15, 33-4, 38-9, 54-5, 60-3, 75-8, 82-6, 106-117, 176-181). Also depicts 12 'potato grounds', primarily concentrated along the Manawatu River in the Manawatu District highlighted green, from Tahumataroa southwards to Purikawau (sections 3-4, 6-7, 12, 17-18, 20, 24-7, 32-3, 35-7). One is also depicted in the Orewenua District over sections 54-5 and 77. Map has been copied and the coloured highlighted areas added, as on the original map. Several pa sites are indicated on the original map along the Manawatu River (such as Pa Taitara, Pa Taha). Names on sections include Wotenui's Place, Ara-Tangata, Porikawau, Kuti Kuti Rau, Te Paiaka, Te Kari Kari, Koputorua, Te Rotorua, Tokomaru, Tahumataroa. Note on map shows that Te Kari Kari is the headquarters for the surveying staff. Several handwritten notes on original map are illegible on this copy. Description: Topographical, exploratory map of the western part of the North Island from Taranaki southwards to Wellington, Cook Stait, and the northern part of the South Island, to Hokitika and Banks Peninsula. Shows the Taranaki, Wellington, Tasman, Nelson and Marlborough regions, with placenames, contours, coloured shading and some nautical information. Includes detailed notes about the exploration at the bottom of the map, however this text is not legible. Description: Plan of the proposed city of Wellington that was to be located near the mouth of the Hutt River and Petone, Lower Hutt City. The plan covers 1361 acres, exclusive of streets and terraces, with 261 acres for government purposes, squares, public buildings, hospitals, schools, markets, wharves, and 1100 acres for settlers for building purposes. The town is laid out in a grid pattern, with the Hutt River running through the centre, and a terrace around the periphery. Several blocks on the plan are allocated for specific purposes, such as government offices, prison, public baths, museum, barracks, president's palace, college of surgeons. Four cemeteries are proposed on the corners of the plan, each of eight acres. Note on map says the town is to be surrounded by 1100 farms of 100 acres each. Note on map before copying states each blank square is 8 acres. Stamped Dixson Library, public library of NSW. Description: Map of Porirua Harbour, Paramata, Plimmerton and Pukerua districts with Mana Island. Location of several pa sites indicated: Wairaka Pa near Pukerua Bay; Taupo Pa (built 1844) at Plimmerton, Warakoua Pa on Porirua Harbour's North shore, and a pa at Titahi Bay. Also shows location of Jackson's Hotel, Thom's hotel and whaling station, Maori gardens beyond Taupo pa and Maori path to Pukerua Bay. Subdivisions of land are indicated around Porirua Harbour. Attributed to Charles Heaphy until 1993, because sketches referred to in title were thought to be Heaphy's. Reattribution to Brees because 1. Brees was Principal surveyor for the N.Z.Company and the map shows land subdivisions. 2. Handwriting very similar to Brees' on MS map held by the Admiralty (photo held by Cartographic Collection (823 at / 1844-5 / acc 855) 3. Indications of points of view of sketches can mostly be linked with known originals by Brees. The following list gives the numbers on this map followed by titles and plate numbers of the matching illustration from Brees' Pictorial Illustrations of New Zealand (London, 1847). No.21 [i.e. no. 1 or 2?] = Porirua Harbour no. 35, described as looking towards the north from near Jackson's towards Thom's. No.3. Thom's whaling station, Porerua, no.14. No.4.
