Description: Depicts the ceremony of choosing the first National flag of New Zealand by the Maori chiefs from one of three designs, witnessed by a grathering of missionaries, settlers, commanders of 10 British and 3 American ships. The ceremony took place at the house of the British Resident, Mr James Busby at Waitangi in the Bay of Islands on the 20th March 1834 with a salute of 21 guns from HMS Alligator (in distance). The flag that was chosen is being pointed at by a chief holding up a greenstone mere. The design chosen was the red cross of St George on a white background and a small red St George's cross in the top left hand corner on a blue background. In each of these quarters is an 8 pointed star. An enlargement of the flag is in the bottom lefthand corner of the postcard. The flag was called the Flag of United Tribes of New Zealand (1834-1840) The flag was adopted by Shaw Savill & Company as its house flag in 1858 it having ceased to be the national flag when New Zealand came under the British sovereignty Quantity: 1 colour photo-mechanical print(s). Description: Album of photographs (mainly landscapes) taken by John Tenison Salmon between 1930 and 1941. The album is divided into sections (not in chronological order), many relating to camping holidays with an unidentified companion. Areas covered included a Christmas holiday trip in 1937 to the East Coast and thermal regions around Tikitere and Waimangu, the Morere nikau forest, Mount Maunganui beach, Hongi's track, the buried village at Te Wairoa, and Rotorua. A North Auckland trip in December 1938 included camping as far north as Paihia, Russell and Waitangi, the Waitangi Falls, the Waipoua Kauri Forest and Trounson's Kauri Park, also Auckland, the Kaingaroa Plains and Waiouru Valley. Areas of erosion were noted, and mangrove swamps. An Anniversary Day trip (22-23 January 1939) took Salmon to the Putangirua Pinnacles in the Wairarapa; and in September 1941 he went to the Hawke's Bay area. In 1945 he went on a North Island Expedition working on malaria control, with ?Bissett, and William John Phillipps. February 20-27 1939 was a trip across the Napier-Taupo Road, and included a number of images of the silt and desolation caused by a great flood in the Esk Valley in 1938. In 1936 Salmon went on a geological trip to the Rotorua area, and at Orakei Korako he was particularly interested in "sinter formations" (thermal deposits of silica, of which the Pink and White Terraces were examples). Description: Views of the Chatham Islands, with emphasis on the house "Te Whariki" at Tuku, various aspects of wool baling, and wool transportation using a bullock team, and the landscape near Tuku. A number of images show buildings at Waitangi, Chatham Island, including the post office, the Mangoutu Hotel (also known as Odman's Hotel), the courthouse, and Heslop's Hotel. The house "Te Whariki" was built by E. Guest, but seems to be the home of Harry Blyth who appears in a number of the images. Harry Blyth is the collector of the images in the album, and possibly the photographer of some. It is also possible that some photographs were taken by Ernest Guest (photographer and postmaster), and some by Blyth's wife, Daisy Felicia Blyth (nee Cox), who was a photographer in her own right (see Turnbull Library Biographies Index) Title supplied by Library. Description: Photographs taken by Maurice Henry Hayward while on a work relief scheme on the Chatham Islands building a new wharf at Waitangi. Included are views of Waitangi and its principle buildings, the Post Office, the hotels and the radio station. Also depicted is race day, bullock teams, horses hauling wool bales on sledges, sheep waiting at Waitangi Wharf, human bones, Tommy Solomon's funeral, a shipwreck, the countryside, and coastal views. Throughout the album are images of the old wharf at Waitangi, and the new one under construction and finally completed. There is a record of a tramping and hunting trip made by three or four men, one of whom was Hayward, and two interior views of the living quarters for the relief workers. Some photographs show the men riding horses, and dressed as cowboys or tough looking seamen. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s).
