Description: Letters written by Herbert (Bert) Charles Thomas to his parents from Auckland, Hamilton and Tokanui (1945-1946), then from Sydney, the `Asturias', South Africa, Luanshya in Northern Rhodesia, Dar-Es-Salaam, Mikindani in Tanganyika (1946-1949) and finally from England (1949-1950). He described his daily work while in New Zealand, experiences with landladies, his experiences looking for work and travelling in various parts of Africa. The letters have been transcribed by Thomas's sister, Betty Brookes, and family background information supplied by another sister, Ann Turvey. Family and friends include a gathering at the christening of Malcolm McWhannell (son of Joan and John McWhannell), Bill and Kathleen Haines of `The Croft', Wiltshire, England; Elizabeth and Jane Geddis as teenagers; John McIlrea, a very young boy watching shearing; Mike and Jill Carter; and the home of Mrs Mavis Commons. Scenes relating to `Rozel', the farm owned by Frederick and Rhoda McWhannell, include the felling of a huge aspen poplar in 1963, and working with Mr Gerlach, with a trailer filled with bamboo. Description: Political cartoons from the end of the ministry of Peter Fraser, the lead up to the 1949 election (in which he was defeated by Sidney Holland), and the first year of Holland's ministry. These cartoons mainly address Holland's link to the British conservatives (which McNamara had a very negative view of), and cuts he made to wages, pensions and allowances when he came into power. Talks about the job managing a staff of four and a budget, and dealing with the public. Refers to moving to the larger Auckland office with a multicultural team. Mentions the Registrar's Office being moved from the Department of Justice to the Department of Internal Affairs in 1995.
