Description: Hand-drawn map of the area from Taumarunui following the main trunk line and the Ongarue River northwards to Mangeokewa River to the Waikato River and Waihaha River to Waituhi. Creeks, streams and rivers are named, some marked in blue. Watersheds of the Mokau, Wanganui and Waikato Rivers are prominently marked as are land blocks and mountain peaks which include height in feet. Lines of the Taringamotu Company's Tram and the Mangapehe Tram are drawn and the map includes many references to tram formations. Directions with mileages are given to Lake Taupo. Description: Publicity photographs taken for New Zealand Railways between 1937 and 1938 by unidentified photographers. Photographs in the North Island include tours between Stratford and Ongarue; Ngaruawahia celebrations in 1938 (including views of King Koroki's house which was built in 1938); Rotorua and six lakes trip; and opening ceremonies for the Hutt Railway. In the South Island views include Caroline Bay with events at the soundshell; in Timaru, views of a two-storied clubhouse and men playing bowls, a person practising croquet, and several games of tennis on a series of tennis courts; areas in Queen Charlotte Sound, Portage, Pelorus and Kenepuru Sounds and Blenheim Aerodrome; Tasman and Franz Josef Glaciers; Milford Sound; Punakaiki; and Cromwell. Description: Album of photographs (mainly landscapes) taken by John Tenison Salmon between 1930 and 1941. The album is divided into sections (not in chronological order), many relating to camping holidays with an unidentified companion. Areas covered included a Christmas holiday trip in 1937 to the East Coast and thermal regions around Tikitere and Waimangu, the Morere nikau forest, Mount Maunganui beach, Hongi's track, the buried village at Te Wairoa, and Rotorua. A North Auckland trip in December 1938 included camping as far north as Paihia, Russell and Waitangi, the Waitangi Falls, the Waipoua Kauri Forest and Trounson's Kauri Park, also Auckland, the Kaingaroa Plains and Waiouru Valley. Areas of erosion were noted, and mangrove swamps. An Anniversary Day trip (22-23 January 1939) took Salmon to the Putangirua Pinnacles in the Wairarapa; and in September 1941 he went to the Hawke's Bay area. In 1945 he went on a North Island Expedition working on malaria control, with ?Bissett, and William John Phillipps. February 20-27 1939 was a trip across the Napier-Taupo Road, and included a number of images of the silt and desolation caused by a great flood in the Esk Valley in 1938. In 1936 Salmon went on a geological trip to the Rotorua area, and at Orakei Korako he was particularly interested in "sinter formations" (thermal deposits of silica, of which the Pink and White Terraces were examples). Description: Series of postcards of Hamilton taken by G Cartwright: children swimming and playing in the lake; cars and a bus travelling along Victoria Street with shops on either side including a billiard room and a dentist; the traffic bridge, with the railway bridge in the distance over the Waikato River, with river boats moored next to it; Soldier's Park; the cenotaph; a steam train going over the railway bridge; and the traffic bridge with parkland in the foreground. Description: Album of photographs chiefly taken by Roland James Searle, circa 1930s. The first subject is the opening of the Wellington Citizens' War Memorial (Cenotaph), and includes a programme of the dedication and handing over on Sunday 17th April, 1932 (p 001-012). That is followed by the consecration ceremony for the National War Memorial and War Memorial Carillon (again with a copy of the programme), held on Anzac Day, April 25th, 1932 (p 015-023). Pages 029-033 show the arrival of the Wellington Jubilee Dock in 1931, the floating dock which was towed from England by two Dutch tugboats. The next sequence is entitled "The Express pulls out - Thorndon", and follows the Express to Wanganui where views show a river-boat trip up the Whanganui River (p 037-056), and include a map of historical areas on the river compiled by Annabell & Marchant, surveyors of Wanganui (p 055). The train trip is continued in the next section, and includes an illustrated diagram of the Raurimu Spiral, then arrival at the new Beach Road Auckland Railway Station. Photographs of Auckland include the Auckland Institute and Museum, Auckland University, Grafton Bridge, a sailing ship at the wharves, and the Auckland Zoo. Further North there are scenes of ploughing, a mine entrance, rock formations at Waro, and the Taheke Falls; before travelling to Rotorua and the surrounding thermal regions. A number of images were taken at Whakarewarewa, including photos of Paul Thomas and his wife, along with scenes showing women washing clothes in hot pools, a woman with a baby on her back holding a rope with a food basket cooking in the pool, children in a hot pool, and men at work carving. Paul Thomas wrote to thank Searle for sending him copies of photographs (p 101, written on May 1st 1932). Later photographs again with the train often in view show timber felling and milling, and views of the Arapuni hydroelectic power station. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s). Also includes photographs of pioneer aviators Charles Kingsford Smith, Charles Ulm and Maurice Buckley, and their planes. Source of title - Title supplied by Library Arrangement: All prints were originally in one album which was cut up by the donor prior to their arrival at the Library. Many of the images are of tramping, camping and climbing holidays with friends and family, both in the North Island (Lake Waikaremoana, the far north, and in the Ruapehu and Taupo Districts), and the South Island (Greenstone River, gold sluicing and gold panning at Moonlight, Queenstown and Wanaka). Most scenes state the location, but very few people are identified, and then only by Christian name.
