Description: Mounted images with annotations from the first part of Albert Armitage Salmon's 1936-1937 trip to New Zealand. Images of South Island scenery and tramping, particularly along the Milford Track, comprise the bulk of the photographs, but prints also include some images of Salmon's departure from Sydney. Photographs taken by Salmon. - The images follow the route of Salmon and his companions' travels, and begin in Sydney Habour (Port Jackson) with images of the Habour Bridge, Luna Park illuminated at night, and the ship, 'Strathnaver', in the water. Also contains a photograph of Salmon's travel companions, Mary Hansen, Eric Keehn, Irene Booth, and Reg Booth aboard the deck of the 'S.S. Awatea' on their journey across the Tasman Sea. - The New Zealand images of the North Island begin in Auckland, and show a view of the Harbour and the University grounds with tulips in bloom. The images also include a view from inside a road tunnel in the King Country, rock formations above the Awakino River, the coastline and rock formations at New Plymouth, views of Mount Egmont (Taranaki), and tramping scenes in the fairy forest of Mount Egmont. The photographs also include views of Wanganui and the Wanganui River, the Wellington Harbour towards Miramar peninsula from the summit of Mount Victoria, and the hoisting of their car 'Marie', a Ford V8, onto the deck of the 'Rangitira' for the ferry ride from Wellington to Port Lyttelton, Christchurch. - The South Island photographs begin in Christchurch and include images of the War Memorial Bridge over the Avon River, and Hagley Park. The bulk of the images show scenery in Fiordland, including views of Lake Te Anau, the Eglinton Valley, the Hollyford River, Milford Sound, the swinging bridge and other scenes along the Milford Track, including images of snow, ice, waterfalls, glaciers, rivers, plant life, and mountain peaks. The box also contains a photograph of Mary Hansen wearing ankle boots with small heels as she crosses the Roaring Meg stream from Jervois Glacier. Description: Album of publicity photographs, chiefly taken by unidentified photographers in the 1930s. Many are photographs of posters, artwork and advertisements, all emphasising the beauty of New Zealand, and how easy it is to travel through the country by rail, and by the New Zealand Railways bus and ferry services. Some of the artwork was done by Stanley Davis (one photograph shows the funeral of S. Davis, with the hearse parked outside the funeral parlour in Kent Terrace, Wellington); and by Marmaduke Matthews. (On page 53 there is a photograph of a black and white sketch of Victoria University College, by Marmaduke Matthews). There is a photograph also of the painting of Sir Ernest Rutherford, by Oswald Birley. Photographs of places include a sequence showing the Dominion Museum and Art Gallery in Wellington, with an exterior view with the Carillon, and interior views of museum exhibits, art gallery spaces (including one room containing the Murray Fuller Exhibition of Contemporary British Art), and the tea-rooms. Several views show the exterior and interior of the Alexander Turnbull Library, with Clyde Taylor the librarian in two scenes seated at his desk, and one of a reader in the reading room. Another sequence shows horses, sheep and bulls being readied for transportation by ferry. Two group portraits are associated with the Empire Games, one entitled `Empire athletes', and the other showing cyclist Roy Taylor with a group. Other group portraits are not identified, though one is entitled `Staff Xmas party 1937'. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s). Description: The steamship `Tamahine' leaving Wellington on the 14th of November 1938. Taken from the deck of the Awatea, by an unidentified photographer. Inscriptions: Verso - By the number of cars on the deck one would suggest that holidays have started. This is taken frim the boat deck of the Awatea, the difference in size of the two ships is easily seen. 15/11/38 [probably the date of publication in the Evening Post newspaper] The steamship Tamahine was a Cook Strait ferry of 1989 tons.
