Description: Set of photographs of drainage operations on the Hauraki Plains. Spoil from the canal and ditch construction was used as foundation for roads so road construction is also shown. The photographs include two men hay harvesting in front of a small house, a man in a flax field, a dredge at work, the labourers' camp, boats moored at a jetty in Ngatea. Description: One side of the folded sheet shows a bird's eye view of "The road to Hanmer from Christchurch, with labels for Papanui, Styx, Belfast, Chaney's Corner, Whites Bridge, Kaiapoi, Woodend, Waikuku, Saltwater Creek, Leithfield, Amberley, Greney's Road, Glasnevin, Waipara Bridge, Weka Pass, Waikari, Hurunui, Culverden, Montrose, Upper Waiau Ferry, and Hanmer. Also marked are the following hotels (in order from Christchurch to Hanmer): Papanui, Phoenix, Belfast, Royal Hotel (Woodend), Royal Hotel (Leithfield), Railway Hotel and Crown Hotel as well as Frew Brothers Garage (all Amberley), Great Northern Hotel and Star & Garter Hotel as well as Mercer's Garage (all Waikari), Hurunui Hotel, Culverden Hotel, and Jollie's Pass Hotel and St Helen's Station (Hanmer). Description: Hand-traced map with annotations of roads, railways, some of which are proposed, and boundaries covering the area from Cape Kidnappers, including the East Cape, across to Rotorua to Lake Taupo and the Kaimanawa Range. Included in the unfinished reference key are Moa remains etc., Footprints, Remains in caves, Bones, etc. in open, all of which do not appear to be marked on this map. Red ink annotations, written by 'Black', include several points where the height is recorded in feet and notes such as Maori, Volcanic rocks, Massacre Te Kooti, 1869. It is not known if Black's work relates to the black ink annotations which detail the landing of H.M.S. Eclipse at Rangitukia on July 5, 1865 with 120 Militia and 75 Highlanders. The date of the skirmish is given as 18 July and 2 Aug. Kairomiromi. Also recorded is Pukemaire, Oct. 1st, H.M.S. Brick.
