Description: Slides of images collected by Judith Binney relating to her research on Rua Kenana Hepetipa. Some photographs taken in 1981. Others taken circa 1981. Photographer unidentified, possibly Binney. Six images show a red flag labelled with the words 'Rua Tupua'. Four show wooden carvings representing Tangata Iti and Paikea (with tuku tuku panels and photographs alongside) inside the house Toi kai rakau at Waikirikiri marae in Ruatoki. Further images comprise one of a wooden carved statue in Rotora showing a figure holding a lizard, and one looking towards a small house in a rural area. Binney has identified this last image as 'Rua. Whare Karakia. Te Teko'. Description: Chiefly pages from three photograph albums, with images relating to the Presbyterian mission in the Whakatane district, taken circa 1918-circa 1920s by unidentified photographers. Grace Leitch Johnston (later the wife of Presbyterian minister Rev P Gladstone Hughes) features in many of the images. The images mostly show unidentified Maori children and adults and also people probably working for, or visiting, the mission. Includes a few photographs of Wi Mutu and of Maori WWI soldiers (PAColl-9928-25-17). Also some images of buildings including a meeting house at Waiohao. Also includes a group portrait taken at the wedding of the Rev John George Laughton and Horiana Te Kauru in 1921 with Miss Johnston as bridesmaid. Photograph taken by W Haughton of Rotorua. Description: Album of photographs relating to the Presbyterian mission in the Whakatane district, taken circa 1918-ca 1920 by unidentified photographers. The album was given to Grace Leitch Johnston (later the wife of Presbyterian minister Rev P Gladstone Hughes) by 'E E W' (probably Elsie E Webber, later Mrs Elsie E Little) at 'Xmas 1920'. The images chiefly show unidentified Maori children (probably the pupils of the schools set up by the mission) but also people probably working for, or visiting, the mission. Four images include Presbyterian missionary John George Laughton. One shows him with the prophet Rua Kenana. Also images of a large unidentified hui and a church. Inscriptions: Inside front cover: To Grace L Johnston with love from E E W Xmas 1920 Relationship complexity - Some images duplicated at PAColl-9928-27.
