To the right a group of Labour supporters raise their leader Bill Rowling aloft shouting 'Victory at last'. On the far right is deputy David Lange. Context: prepared for the NZ Times for the 1981 election (28 November 1981) covering the possibilty of a Labour victory. Not used because Labour lost. Description: Shows a Guy Fawkes that represents 'world economy' burning on an 'Economic blame bonfire'. On the left Prime Minister Muldoon is seen to be responsible for the bonfire and is using it to blame the world economy for New Zealand's economic plight. On the right Bill Rowling and deputy David Lange have grabbed Muldoon and are blaming him for New Zealand's economic woes. Context: Labour was keen to lay the blame on Muldoon for the country's economic ills. Muldoon was equally keen to blame a sluggish world economy. The 5th of November is of course Guy Faulkes day. Description: Features the leading members of parliament as rugby teams. Above is the Labour team with leader Bill Rowling in the centre flanked by David Lange and Matiu Rata, Minister of Maori Affairs from 1972. The lower National team shows Prime Minister Rob Muldoon in the centre, with, to his right, Warren Cooper Minister of Regional Development, and Barry Brill Minister of Energy and Minister of Science and Technology, and to his left, Colin McLachlan Minister of Transport, and Jim Bolger Minister of Labour. Context: Matiu Rata left the Labour Party in 1980 to form the Mana Motuhaka Party. The two ministers to the right of the prime minister were chiefly responsible for the 'Think big' projects. The two ministers on his left are Colin McLachlin who mismanaged this transport role and Jim Bolger who failed to win the Kinleith Pulp and Paper Mill dispute - which was a triumph for Federation of Labour Secretary Jim Knox. Description: In six cameos a voter in the East Coast Bays by-election explores his options by visiting the National Party, the Labour Party and Social Credit. Prime Minister Rob Muldoon (National Party) is being strangled by a snake representing the 'economy', Leader of the Labour Party Bill Rowling is involved in a fight and Social Credit leader Bruce Beetham engulfs the voter in a flood of words. The overwhelmed voter decides to vote for Social Credit whom he fails to understand but thinks must be better than the other two. Context: Although now a safe electorate for National, East Coast Bays was held for seven years by Social Credit MP Gary Knapp, from the 1980 by-election, where he defeated future National party leader Don Brash until the declining fortunes of the Democratic Party (as Social Credit renamed itself), led to Knapp being defeated in 1987 by Murray McCully, who has held the electorate since.
