Description: `When can you start?', an autobiography of Fry's life up until the 1960s describing his childhood, education, war service and employment as a journalist for the Southern Cross newspaper and the New Zealand Listener and editorial work for A H & A W Reed. Chapter 1 begins with Fry arriving in Wellington from Christchurch in 1948 and he describes his experiences working as a journalist for the Southern Cross newspaper and gives his impressions of Wellington, including being a student at Victoria University College in the late 1940s and early 1950s. He then reverts back to his childhood, describing growing up in Wallsend and Christchurch, attending Papanui Technical College and being apprenticed as an electrician. Chapter 10 ends in 1944 when Fry enrolled in the Royal Navy 21st Fleet Airm draft to be trained in England. Names referred to in the text are entered in the name index. Quantity: 1 folder(s). Sites from the New Zealand War include Te Rangihaeata's stronghold (1846), the site of a chapel and the colonial cemetery at Pauatahanui, military trenches (one named McKillops), the barracks of the 65th regiment, the officer's quarters, the Boulton's Hotel of 1847, Troopers Hill, isolated Maori grave along Paekakariki Hill Road, the landing stage of the 58th and 65th regiments, Tandy's constablulary's post and the Waitaha Maori at Ration Point. Sites during World War II include the home guard headquarters of 1941 at Jones Deviation, the 1939 New Zealand Army Unit and United States Marines 2nd division near Kakaho Stream, as well as the Duck Creek saw mill at Bradey's Bay. They were members of a large party of watermen brought out to New Zealand as a group, generally referred to as the Deal Boatmen. Letters from Edward, who arrived on the "Star of India", 1874, comment on social conditions, and life on South Island railways, 1877-1912 (with diary of voyage from Lyttelton to UK on the SS `Turakina', Jul-Aug 1906); also his wife's and family's letters 1914-1958. Letters from James, comment on Dunedin, 1889-1892, giving first impressions, prices, trade union matters and working conditions. Letters from Frederick describing voyage to Lyttelton on the `Olive' in 1878, first impressions of Canterbury (later of Melbourne). Also letters of family members in South African War, World Wars I and II, and later papers; with notes, photographs and genealogical information. Description: Relate mainly to the donor's father, George Klee. Shows George and his brothers as volunteers for the South African War. George as a volunteer in the artillery at Wellington taking part in training and activities supporting the Home of Compassion. There are some photographs dating from World War I and World War II, but the largest group relate to the ship 'Janey Seddon' and her use by the Fort Dorset Garrison for towing shell practice targets into place. Description: The collection comprises four folders on Robert Martin's career as a post office employee and telegraphist, while the rest consists of papers, scrapbooks and newspaper cuttings relating to his military service during World War II in North Africa, Italy, and the Solomon Islands with the Field Ambulance service of the New Zealand Medical Corps. Correspondence with his brother, Martin, and his sister, Valerie, are included, as is correspondence with two of his comrades in the Field Ambulance. Also included is a typed translation of a Japanese diary which he acquired during the Solomon Islands campaign, probably on Mono in the Treasury Islands, and a typed copy of the diary and other papers of his friend, Colin John Arroll, who also served with the Field Ambulance. His friend, John Colin Arroll, who also served with the Field Ambulance, sent Robert Martin a copy of his diary, reminiscences and other papers. Donor is Robert Martin's daughter. Notes by Judith Hampson on the family (folder 7) Source of title - Supplied title Born at Rotorua, Hampson studied law at Auckland University College before returning to practise in his home town in 1908, where he developed a strong interest in Native Land matters. In 1912, he married Catherine (Kate) Hand Rogan, daughter of Judge John Rogan. In Sep 1940, he was in England to represent the appellants Hoani Te Heuheu Tukino and the Aotea District Maori Land Board before the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council and to present a Memorial on the claims of the Maori people under the Treaty of Waitangi.
