McNab recounts his journey with technical details about the transport he took, various points of interest such as lengths of tunnels, Windy Wellington, and he includes poems; he names and describes each geyser at the Pink and White Terraces, particularly notes churches visited and people he met. Description: Cadastral map of Evans Bay to Kilbirnie, also to Constable and Owen streets, Newtown, Wellington. The area includes the coastline with Patent Slip and proposed jetties near Belvedere Road to Rodrigo Road, Kilbirnie. Numbered sections include acreages and some sites of houses. Roads are named and a stream with a bridge is marked. A note states 'right to water' at Busaco Road. A track to Lyell [sic] Bay is noted, as is a road to the Pilot Station. The town belt is marked. The lithographer is named as Lyon & Blair. Additions to the map are prominently marked sections at Evans Bay with various dates and names of Short, Williams, Ferguson, Harcourt, B. Smith, Rhodes, Rae, McCarthy, Boon, Earl, Knowles, Barber, Tait, White, Edw. Barton. The name of Lyon is marked in sections at Kilbirnie. Description: Comprises holograph diary kept by P Davy on the `Ruahine' and during his tour of New Zealand. After disembarking at Wellington where he visited relatives he toured to other parts of New Zealand. He describes a gathering of Maori following the settlement of fishing rights on Lake Wairarapa, a visit to a freezing works at Belfast, gold mining on the West Coast and Rotorua where he visited a pa, saw geysers and bathed in the hot pools. His journal ends on the return journey to England when staying at Sydney. Also includes transcript of part of the diary (16 Nov 1895-3 Jan 1896). Source of title - Supplied Relationship complexity - Full transcript of diary at MS-Papers-4391 Davy and his Aunt Harriet boarded the `Ruahine' at Plymouth 16 Nov 1895 and disembarked 12 Jan 1896 at Wellington where they stayed with relatives. After travelling around New Zealand they left Auckland for Sydney, 18 Mar. The writer of the diary is presumed to be P Davy, a passenger on the `Ruahine'; he visited members of the Davy family while in Wellington. He was probably one of the Devonshire Davys, a nephew of George Boutflower Davy, an official of the Land Registration Court of NZ, and the son of Edward Davy (1806-1885), an experimental chemist who emigrated to Australia. Description: The papers largely consist of correspondence spanning four decades between Jane Oates and her sister, Margaret Morten, who lived in Derbyshire, England, but include letters written by Samuel, John Morten (husband of Margaret), various children of the Oates and Morten families, and by various other family friends and relatives. Letters give details about family matters, the concerns of stock and crop farming, adverse weather conditions, etc both in New Zealand and rural England. Description: The reminiscences cover the period 1839 to 1914 and most are based on Taine's own experience although they contain also an outline of the early history of the colony from other sources. He came to New Zealand aged 22 on the `Adelaide' and lived in Wellington till 1862 when he moved to Dunedin. After 1879 Taine lived in Auckland. At the end of volume 3 there is a section on early Wellington street names. Also (volume 3 p 515) there is a note on the history of Waiwera which Taine frequently visited.
