Description: Photograph album of New Zealand and Pacific Island scenes. Most were taken by George Dobson Valentine, in the North Island of New Zealand, Samoa, Tonga, and Tahiti; a few were taken by the Burton Brothers in the South Island. Within the New Zealand scenes there are a large number of views inside and out of the Waitomo Caves; and another group show the area around Lake Rotomahana with the Pink and White Terraces before and after the 1886 eruption of Mount Tarawera. McNab recounts his journey with technical details about the transport he took, various points of interest such as lengths of tunnels, Windy Wellington, and he includes poems; he names and describes each geyser at the Pink and White Terraces, particularly notes churches visited and people he met. Description: Photographs of New Zealand scenery taken by various photographs of whom Wheeler & Son and the Burton Brothers are identified. There are a number of images of Mount Tarawera and surrounds both before and after the eruption on 10th June 1886. A few other images show the volcanic areas around Whakarewarewa and Wairakei in the North Island; all the rest are in the South Island. Two interesting images show people transported across wide rivers by flying fox, one with a woman sitting in the `cage', across a river near Lake Wakatipu (probably Deep Creek or the Shotover, near Skippers), and one with two people crossing the Hooker River. Most of the views of people are distant views, but several near the end of the album show close-up views of men climbing on glaciers with ropes and ice picks. Description: Album of tourist views of New Zealand and the sub-Antarctic Islands, chiefly taken by John Richard Morris, Jnr, circa 1890s. Places and subjects listed above where identified. The Sub-Antarctic Island views are all of native flora and fauna of the different islands, listed on the images as mollymawks, albatrosses, sea lions, crested penguins and erect-crested penguins On page 32 there is a view of the SS Knight Templar leaving Lyttelton on February 17, 1900, taking about 260 soldiers and 300 horses of the 3rd Contingent "the New Zealand Roughriders" to Durban, en route to fight in the South African War. Description: Photographs taken during the 1880s, chiefly by George Valentine, and Charles Spencer, both of whom visited Mount Tarawera before and after the eruption of June 1886. Inserted in a pocket at the front of the album are images cut from the paper "Newsview", June 1949, showing historic photographs of the eruption, and another double-page from the Weekly News (June 6, 1951) on the "65th Anniversary of the Mount Tarawera catastrophe". The latter article notes that mud, estimated at 75 ft in depth, covered a vast area. The album includes images taken before the eruption, and shows the same areas irreparable damaged. Many show the Pink and White Terraces, the village of Te Wairoa, and the massive rift in the mountain; also a group led by Sir James Hector to study the aftermath and changes wrought by the eruption. Description: The journal contains an account of McNab's journey with observations on the places he visited. Includes mention of McNab completing the census aboard the SS `Taiaroa' on the night of 28 Mar 1886. Variations in title - Spine title `Travels in New Zealand' Relationship complexity - Also transcript styled as "Travels in New Zealand" (MS-Papers-6235-3) and microfilm (Micro-MS-0930) In Feb 1886 McNab left his home in Timaru for a tour of the North Island. He travelled by train to Christchurch, by steamer to Wellington and from there by another steamer to Napier. From here he travelled to Taupo via Tauranga by coach and toured the adjacent thermal areas and visited the Pink and White Terraces. Back in Tauranga McNab proceeded by steamer to Auckland from where he took another steamer to New Plymouth. From there he travelled by train to Wanganui and then on to Palmerston North from where he proceeded by coach to Masterton. Arriving in Wellington by train McNab sailed by steamer to Lyttelton and returned home to Timaru by train. Quantity: 1 folder(s).
