Description: Cadastral map showing area 9 miles south of Tauranga, from the Ruahihi Bridge bordering the Kumi Kumi land blocks on the west and the Kaimai and the Tauwharawhara on the east. The Mangapapa River is shown, along with the Mangakarengorengo, Ngaumuwahine and Manga Hurengorengo Streams. Most of the land blocks indicate their acreage. In the Whaitikuranui no. 6b block, diagram and text which reads 'Thames Valley Co. Station Homestead'. The road or track from Cambridge (Okoroire) to Tauranga is shown to be 31 miles. A pencil annotation shows the Ongaonga no. 2 block and the Kumi Kumi no. 1 block (up to the Ngaumuwahine Stream) subdivided. The map has pencil and some ink annotations. Description: Copy of a hand-drawn map of two adjointing sections of farm land adjacent to the Harataunga Harbour, now known as Kennedy Bay, and bordered by the Whareroa and Ohinau Streams, Puketutu and Kaotara Hills and Rangitahi. One section has the names of Nathan Kennedy & Brothers, while the second has McGregor & Atkinson's names, together with acreages. The McGregor & Atkinson property includes the location of a sawmill and wharf, buildings are indicated and one is named 'Mr. Atkinson's'. A handwritten note on the original, written within this section states 'Grant to J. Cruikshank, Nov. 26th., 1867. 12.15a Sol 155'. Within the section of Nathan Kennedy & brothers, the note states 'Grant to Mr. J. Kennedy, Nov 26th, 1867. 12.15a Sol 155'. Includes references to Native land and Mr. D. Lowe's land. On the opposite side of the harbour, a settlement is marked and the site of a Maori church. A handwritten note on the top left states: 'The copy of a map deposited in this office. ... Description: Manuscript map from Tauranga Harbour, showing Greerton, south along the Waimapu Stream, south to Otane Wainuku, showing road (or track) from Noawato to Te Puke, and from the harbour to Te Puke, from Tauranga through Greerton and south to Noawato and onwards towards Rotorua and a road or track that extends from Greerton and runs parallel to the Waimapu Stream. Also depicts a forest reserve, heavy rimu area, and suggested tramway route from the route in Whakamapama north to the stream. Pencil annotation of 'Kaiwai' is crossed out and replaced with 'Whakamapama'. Extended Title - number Quantity: 1 manuscript map(s). Description: 'History of the Western Hauraki Plains', compiled by Elsie Alice McDonald (later Mrs Rae), focusses on the geology, landscape, and social history of the Western Hauraki Plains in the Waikato Region. McDonald's history has a preface and two parts: "Pt 1 The Maori" and "Pt 2 The Pakeha". In Part I subjects covered include pa sites and fortifications, burial sites and traditions, eeling, and conflict with other tribes, including Ngapuhi under Hongi Hika. Part II focusses on the development of the land for dairying and flax farming, the discovery of taonga during development, the building of houses, various personalities, and social events such as dances. Places specifically mentioned include: Kahurangi Pa, Torehape stream, Patetonga, and Mangawhero. Illustrations attributed to Kenneth William Rae (later McDonald's husband). Includes pasted in photographs. See Illustrations field for further information. Includes two commendations on the title page, one being from Duncan McFadyen Rae (principal of Auckland Training College and no relation) and the other from a person with the initials "F C L". Notes and remarks in pencil throughout the volume are in an unknown hand. Description: Hydrographic chart showing the track of the Royal Admiral into and exiting the River Thames, as well as the track of Captain Cook which includes soundings from Mercury Bay, around Cape Colville and inland up the river to Bluff Cliff, and then Cook's exit past Point Rodney, the Leaning Tower and Bream Head along the West entrance. Large block of text named 'remarks' describes safe entry into harbour and best acces to trees for felling. Trees were to be used as spars. Says 'best spars are at Kakramare' elsewhere written on map as 'Krakamare'. Catalogue card: Manuscript made in the 'Royal Admiral'. 'Copy of original acc. B Hooker'. Reverse of map reads: 'Z.1.976'.
