Description: Photographs of New Zealand scenes taken between circa 1890s and circa 1940s, chiefly by James Caleb Cornwall. Many images have a brief explanatory captions. Contains images including a kapa haka group performing on a barge, a building decorated for Royal [Coronation 1937?] with cameo portraits of George VI and Queen Elizabeth, animals at a zoo (pelican and [thar?]), a thermal area, and a bush scene. Transportation is featured, with photographs showing trains (locomotives and carriages, including a Fairlie locomotive) and railway architecture (train tracks and Main Trunk Line viaduct) as well as car and horse and cart scenes. Places and buildings include Hastings Main Street, Blenheim Memorial (clock tower and fountain), Palmerston North (including birds on pond [Domain?], a church, shops, and the main square), Arthurs Pass and Porters Pass, a Coromandel homestead, house and garden of Cara [Sawings?], and [Otago Settlers?] Museum, Dunedin. Dewar, George Edward, 1895- : Photographs of Chaslands

Description: Collection of photographs used by Dewar in his book Chaslands, a number of which include extensive notes. The photographs are of: Harry Croft's hut on Wallace Beach; Heathfield Dairy Factory with six wagons loaded with urns outside (the notes name all the men in the photograph); Waikawa sawmill tramline with timber truck; Arthur and Fred Croft outside their house at Chaslands; Chaslands School (the notes name all the teachers 1895-1950); MacLennan Railway Station showing the cleared hillsides around it; a car at the far end of the bridge near Chaslands; the boys and girls of Ratanui School with their teacher George Dewar ca 1935; the Chaslands rugby football team with Fred Croft, Donald Little, Bandy Kini, George Dewar, Kangaroo Bill Wells and Herb Ottenshaw (others not known); the junction of McLennan and Tahakopa Rivers showing the ford from Owaka to Chaslands (with notes); the first passenger train on the Catlins extension line at MacLennan Station; Tautuku Bay from the top of MacLennan's Hill; two of men in Cathedral Caves; bush scenes around Chaslands; Houipapa Valley from Gibb's Hill with Catlins Lake in the distance; white pines near Owaka; the buried forest north of Poimawea; a car on the road at Smillies Quarry; Curio Bay at Waikawa; and Mount Samson with the bridge over the Chaslands River in the foreground. Description: A large collection of miscellaneous original and copy negatives mostly of Christchurch and the surrounding area. Some are studio portraits of family groups. The rest of the collection includes: a street scene in front of the old railway station; a cycling race; men rowing and canoeing; children playing in a swing park; a brass band playing on board a steamer; various beach scenes including donkey rides; train pulling into Kaiapoi station; a small bach; two girls next to a waterfall; trams and a cyclist going past the Jubliee Clock Tower; the front facade of St Paul's Presbyterian Church; three views of the old Public Hospital next to Hagley Park; the Chamber of Commerce building on the corner of Oxford Terrace and Worcester Street; a copy negative of a carte de visite of a couple kissing; a monument incorporating a tiki on a tall pole and other maori carvings (location unknown); a man at the doorway of his shed with an array of gardening implements; two men pulling a covering back from a hangi pit; the cathedral with a number of trams in front; a tram advertising Ballantynes; a kitchen interior showing a range with kettles on top and a cupboard and dresser with crockery; six Maori on horseback possibly in a procession; a porter bringing a cart of luggage up to a train; five men giving friends piggy backs on the beach; sheep being driven past stock yards; the Avon River; a crowd outside the Avon Rowing Club; Wilson the maltman's horse and cart crossing a bridge; and two images of a harvest festival in a hall with a painted back drop and sheaves of corn arranged in front of it. Description: Photographs of the following locomotives: D Class, E Class (including double Fairlie engines at Wanganui and Wellington), J Class, K Class, L Class, S Class, S & D Class, V Class, W Class, mostly with staff at railway stations, including Christchurch, Wanganui and the engine sheds at Pipitea. The two which are not at stations are of sheep being transported on the Ladle Bend on the Wairarapa line and another on the curve near the summit of the Rimutaka Incline. Also included is a train with passengers and timber at the Rimutaka summit with the railway houses behind it. Photographer unidentified.
