Description: Shows figures on three horses dismounting at hut in centre left background. Hut appears to be of wood, with wooden chimney, and iron roof. A cart approaches in right distance. The title begins with 'and reach the hut' so is presumably a continuation of information in a diary or on another picture. Dated around 1890 as this is assumed to be the exterior of Mrs Birley's establishment shown in A-169-032. She is listed in Wises as a hotel-keeper in Queenstown during the 1880s, and then at Glenorchy in 1890-91. In 1892, J.K. Birley is listed as the hotel-keeper of Mt Earnslaw Hotel, Glenorchy, which may be a grander establishment than this one! Description: Shows group of six men sitting around a rough wooden table lit by smoking candle in bottle. A waiter dishes food from a large pot at right. A saddle is placed on a rafter above the table, and tools or tramping gear rest against the wall at right. Dated ca 1890 because Mrs Birley is listed in Wises 1890-91 as being a hotel keeper at Glenorchy. Previously she had been listed as a hotel-keeper in Queenstown. By 1892 Wises lists J.K. Birley as the hotel-keeper at Mt Earnslaw hotel, Glenorchy; that may or may not be a grander establishment than the hut shown here. The exterior of the hut is assumed to be the one shown in A-169-031 "at foot of Earnslaw". However the artist also made a trip to Fiordland including Manapouri in 1881 and the earlier date may be correct Inscriptions: Recto - top right - [Title] Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). 6.20 Linear Metres.
