Description: The papers consist of: Application form submitted by John Murray Rose, grandson of John Rose; brief Rose family history; extracts from `Waitahuna memories' (Chapter III The First runholders) by Eric Skinner; valuation certificate (1990); photocopy of page from Waitahuna Gully School admission register, 1875-1925; typescript entries from diary of John Rose, ca 1880; photographs of Rose family (photocopies); map of Tuapeka East Survey District (Otago Catchment Board). Original owner of Rutherglen, Waitahuna (Tuapeka East District) was John Rose of Ross-shire, Scotland who acquired the original parcel of land in 1880 (1654 acres). On the death of John Rose in 1925 his son John M Rose (1877-1956) took over the ownership and management of Rutherglen. Parts of the farm were owned by different members of the family at different times but part of the initial purchase remains with John M Rose's son, J Murray Rose at the time the application was made in 2005. In 1972 J Murray Rose sold some 60% of Rutherglen to the New Zealand Government Forest Service. Description: Contains a collection of mostly hand-drawn maps dated from 1848 to 1886. Some relate to Walter Mantell's property in Wellington City, others to his work as a lands purchase commissioner in the South Island, including maps of streets, land ownership and Maori land in Dunedin; maps of Maori land and general topographic features of Otago and Southland; general maps of the South Island; and a map of Maori land in Waitara, Taranaki. Also contains several published maps of southern England with annotations by Gideon Mantell relating to geology and one annotated published map of Seatoun, Wellington from 1878 and one map of New Zealand by James Wyld dated 1848. The original owner of Dunkeld at Beaumont was Robert Wood from Scotland who purchased 21,500 acres in 1886 (Crookston Survey District). In 2005 the property was owned by his great-grandson Robert Wood & his wife Deborah. Description: Topographical survey of the east coast of the South Island from (?)Mohinau, northern Pegasus Bay, inland to the Canterbury Plains, and then includes both the east and west coast from southwards of Rangitata River and Cave Point above Jackson Bay to the Bluff, and including Rakiura, Stewart Island. Includes Maori place names, especially on the east coast and inland of topographical features, including bays, reefs, mountains, rivers and lakes, (the west coast is predominantly English names, such as Poison Bay). Description: The bottom half of the South Island, from just above Banks Peninsula to Stewart Island, showing the lakes of the Southern Alps and Fiordland, somewhat inaccurately. The overall shape of the East Coast around South Canterbury / North Otago is also inaccurately drawn, making the island too narrow. The details of the interior were not drawn from first-hand knowledge but probably from Maori informants There is a very similar map in the Cartographic Collection, also by Mantell and done in 1848. The main differences are in the dotted lines Mantell has drawn across the island, probably land-sale indicators.
