Description: Photographic album created by Joseph Foxley Norris, with many images of places visited in Great Britain, including castles, cathedrals, stately homes, ports, landscapes, and bridges. Joseph Foxley Norris was a founding member of the Cyclists' Touring Club in England, and was a member of the Pickwick Bicycle Club in England with one image being a group portrait of members of the club. A number of the English scenes were photographed by G.W.W. (George Washington Wilson). Other regions visited include Cape Town and Rio de Janeiro. Views of New Zealand are mostly in the South Island, with a few of Wellington (including Government Buildings, Parliament Buildings and Government House). One photograph taken by James Bragge shows a group of unidentified Maori standing outside a meeting house in Masterton. South Island views include a bicycle "meet" in Christchurch, with a large crowd gathered, and a number of penny-farthing bicycles visible. A number of images show men riding penny-farthing bicycles and the dangers of so doing, with posed views of two men underneath their bicycles and one clutching a fence, taken in and around Christchurch. On page 108 is hand-printed award `Anniversary Sports, Christchurch,N.Z. 16th December 1880. The following ten views taken from the Cathedral Tower, Christchurch, are the 3rd prize in the One Mile Champion Bicycle Race won by J. Foxley Norris, Pioneer Bicycle Club'. Other views include a group of about four men touring along the West Coast Road, and notable buildings in Christchurch and Dunedin. One image shows the "cage" crossing the Teremakau River. Three metal buttons featuring a simplified version of the crest, are stitched along the top of the pocket. Quantity: 1 curio(s). Description: Shows view of Wanganui wharf, Christ Church, and Rutland Stockade, framed by cave entrance, with three Maori figures in the foreground. All have rifles in their posession, and are dressed wrapped in cloaks or blankets. Native foliage frames the mouth of the cave Impressed into the wooden frame on either side of the image: W E & F Newton, opticians & globemakers to the Queen, 3 Fleet St Temple Bar London Loosely based on Richard Taylor's 'Wanganui, NZ' (1848), at E-296-q-159, combined with the wood engraving in the Church Missionary Gleaner (1884, p. 83, a re-illustration of an 1850s view) 'The mission station at Wanganui, as seen from a natural cave in the rocks'. The Library also holds Wanganui and pier [?] from cave, New Zealand [185-?], published by W E & F Newton (Curios-021-007), showing the scene in a similar way, by an unknown artist. Description: Album of photographs, engravings and etchings. Frontispiece is a portrait of Gideon Algernon Mantell, painted by J J Masquerier, engraved by Samuel Stepney. On page 30 is `The country of the iguanadon, restored by John Martin ... from the geological discoveries of Gideon Mantell'; page 29 there is a photo of ink drawing of Brighton by A. Devis (Probably English landscape artist Anthony Devis). Page 42 has a photographic copy of a pen & wash drawing by architect William Clayton of Government House in Wellington, ca 1869. It bears little resemblance to the completed building (copy negative available at 1/2-C-021641). Many of the New Zealand scenes are unidentified, though one group were taken in Queen Charlotte Sound, and Picton. Most are taken by unidentified photographers, though there are tourist scenes of Pipiriki and Jerusalem taken by James Valentine, and some of Te Aroha by Frederick George Radcliffe. A collection of 6 etchings by Wilfrid Williams Ball are all related to the Thames in London, including views of the Tower of London, Gravesend, and Greenwich. An early photograph of Mrs Alfred J Woodhouse (mother-in-law of Gideon Mantell), was taken by an unidentified photographer in 1839.
