Description: Reminiscences of Jollie's early life (1841-1865) commencing with his voyage to Wellington on the `Brougham' (1841-1842). A New Zealand Company survey cadet, he assisted with surveys of Wellington (1842-1845), Otago (1846-1847) and Nelson; also worked on Canterbury Association surveys (1849-1851) with Captain Joseph Thomas. He later practised as a surveyor in Canterbury and was active in provincial and national politics. Description: The letters cover his departure to New Zealand, the voyage and his life in New Zealand and Tasmania Publication - Bertram, J M, `New Zealand Letters of Thomas Arnold the Younger', Oxford University Press, Auckland (1966); `Letters of Thomas Arnold the Younger 1850-1900' Oxford University Press, Auckland (1980). Source of title - Supplied Arrangement: . The letters have been further arranged into series since the collection was microfilmed. The original inventory is available on request. Arnold was the son of Thomas Arnold of Rugby School. He came to New Zealand in 1848 on the `John Wickliffe'. He arrived in Wellington but soon moved to Nelson where he started a school, but was soon attracted to Tasmania. He later returned to England and gained some fame as a Catholic convert and scholar of English literature. Description: Reminiscences written in 1910 of Mieville's life in New Zealand, mainly on Glenham Station in the Mataura Valley, Southland, and in Dunedin; transcribed and indexed by Marsha Donaldson. Includes shipboard accounts of the voyage to Port Chalmers on the 'Dominion' in 1851 with the Richardson family, a voyage home to England via Melbourne on the 'Thomas and Henry', and 'Royal Charter' in 1857, and the return voyage to Port Chalmers in 1858 on 'Agra'. He includes some of his wife's diary entries in his reminiscences. His first year in New Zealand was spent at Otepopo on the sheep station owned by Charles Suisted.
