Description: Shipboard diary kept by W L Covert. The SS `John Elder' sailed from Gravesend to Melbourne and on to Sydney. He then trans-shipped to the `Ringarooma' for the onward voyage to Auckland, arriving October 1883. The diary appears to cover events, August 1883 to sometime in 1891. As well as the journey to New Zealand the diary also describes his travels in the North Island once he arrived.
