Description: Most of the reminiscences describe life at Whangarei where her husband was mainly engaged in the flax industry. He also spent some time mining and working as a builder at Thames. Elizabeth recalls Hone Heke's sacking of Kororakea in 1845 and subsequent evacuation of Whangarei settlers to Auckland. The Holmans eventually returned to Whangarei where Henry operated a flax mill until the family moved to the Thames goldfields in 1867. A revival of the flax industry saw them once again return to Whangarei. They retired to Auckland where Henry died in 1894 Relationship complexity - Holograph with ms annotations at MS-Papers-3881 Mrs Holman first came out to Hokianga in 1840. In 1841 she married Henry Charles Holman at Kororareka, and they spent some time at the Bay of Islands, and in Auckland where Henry was appointed Superintendent of Public Works. The letter writer speaks of growing up in Russell, at Bishop Pompallier's house, which according to the writer was 'a ruin - before we lived in it'. Also includes clippings of articles relating to the Mair family, dated 1933. The book contains a handwritten message to James Cowan written from the author, dated 1935. Description: Electronic transcription of Thomas Laslett's New Zealand journal (4) by Meri Low with support from Dr Neville Ritchie and David Wilton. The transcription was commissioned by the Department of Conservation and completed in September 2014. This transcribed journal was one of three journals re-written by Laslett in 1878-1881 from his original diaries from his four visits to New Zealand in 1833-1834, 1837-1838, 1839-1841, 1841-1843. The journals contain original drawings from the original diaries. On his first voyage, Laslett was carpenter on the HMS Buffalo assisting the Surveyors. And was Timber Inspector for the Admiralty on the HMS Buffalo for three voyages and the HMS Tortoise for the last. The journals contain full descriptions of the ship parties' activities, including descriptions of places, Maori villages, Maori practices, disputes between Maori and between Maori and the ship's party, timber collecting practices including employment of Maori labour, problems between crew and officers, European population, and descriptions of flora.
