Description: Fanny's diary covers the period 14 May to 4 September 1891 where she describes her daily life on board the ship `Arawa'. It includes many descriptions of New Zealand and her encounters with the local people and places, in particular the Wellington, Dunedin and Christchurch regions. Includes also photocopied pictures of the ship`Arawa', pages from her original diary plus a picture of the Dod family camping at Birkdale, Lancashire in 1889. Source of title - Supplied Fanny Elizabeth Dod and her sister Eleanor FitzGerald left London and boarded the `Arawa' at Plymouth on 14 May 1891 and disembarked in Capetown, parts of Western Australia, Wellington, Dunedin, Lyttelton and then back to England on 4 September 1891. Description: Four proof sheets containing images taken of the newly constructed house at 3 Gurkha Crescent, Khandallah, Wellington, designed by Roger Walker for house owners Earl and Helen Hingston. Taken in 1972 by Judy Siers. Shows earth mounds and new homes on surrounding suburban building sites, and exterior views (and one interior view) of the newly completed Walker house before garden landscaping. Sheets have annotations (frame number and descriptive information) on the reverse. A short essay by Judy Siers concerning the Hingston house is housed in the Photographic Archive backfile. Arrangement: The proof sheets have matching 35mm negative strips in this collection. Judy Siers commissioned work from Earl Hingston for her publishing business Millwood Press, and often visited the Hingston home at 3 Gurkha Crescent. The house was part of a residential subdivision built on a hill area in Khandallah, Wellington, known in the 1840s as Mount Misery or Sentry-box Hill (later as Boxhill) as it was the site of a sentry post. Description: Photograph of the staff of Staples Brothers & Company Boot Factory outside the factory at 43A Cleveland Street, Brooklyn, Wellington, taken by an unidentified photographer. The four Staples brothers, a sister and a cousin have been identified. John Staples is standing underneath the Staples Bros sign and second cousin Will Staples is standing next to him. Marjory Staples is the last woman seated on the right of the image. William Staples is standing behind her with his arms crossed and a cigarette in his mouth. Arthur Staples is wearing a tie and is standing in the middle of the image behind a man wearing a tie and a waistcoat. Robert Staples is standing at the top of the image next to a man wearing a tie and below a young man wearing an apron. The Staples family were identified by the donor on a copy of the image. The donor also noted that the photograph must have been taken before 1939, as John Staples died in a car crash in 1939. The company first appeared in the Wise's Post Office Directory in 1926. Description: Photographs relating to the Comfort and Sparkes family of Wellington and their vacations, 1927-1972. Photographs taken by a range of unidentified photographers. Many photographs are captioned on the back of the print in various hands and loose album pages have typed captions underneath the photographs. Featured people are Frederick Comfort and his wife Esme Comfort (née Sparkes), Mr and Mrs Sparkes (Esme's parents), and Dan Sparkes (Esme's brother). Also includes a photograph of two people, possibly Comfort's parents, at Diamond Harbour, Lyttelton. Group portraits show Frederick Comfort and his classmates in the 1927 Standard IV class and the 1930 Standard V-VI class at Miramar South School as well as a group photograph from the school's 50th Jubilee. A dog sits in the front row with the children in the 1930 portrait. Another informal portrait, taken in the school grounds in 1931, shows Comfort [in Scout's uniform?] and another unidentified boy [in cadet uniform?]. Esme (at 12 years old) and Dan Sparkes are photographed outside a Seatoun Heights house; and "Mum Pop and Dan [Sparkes]" are photographed on a [Wellington?] beach. Holiday and recreation photographs feature the Bay of Plenty and Wellington regions.
