Description: Describes movements around Sydney, Auckland, Fiji (1861-1862), and participation in the Pukorokoro River blockade (1863). Important episode at Fiji, 27 Jul 1862, having recently arrived at Levuka, Captain Jenkins summoned the chiefs "to a formal meeting on board the Miranda for the purpose of conveying to them the decision of H.M. Ministers not to accept the sovereignty of the Fiji Islands, in terms drawn up by His Excellency Sir John Young". Includes text of declaration in English and Fijian. The Miranda stayed at Levuka most of Jul and Aug; entertained King Thankombau; description of Levuka. Wreck of the `Orpheus' described, Feb 1863. Mainly short log entries but 1863 in some detail; summaries for 1861, 1862 included. Description: Notebook containing handwritten research notes, photographs, and newspaper clippings tipped in. Contains notes and clippings relating to the Ōrākau battle of 1864 and King Tawhiao, waiata, karakia, and a poem by Thomas Bracken about Ōrākau. Also includes notes from an interview with Tamati Hapimana, of Mokoia Island, which includes a karakia for planting kumara. The photographs include images of Ōrākau (one dated 1870 located at page 52 of the notebook, and one undated), and one of Ngāti Raukawa chief Hitiri Te Paerata located at page 39 of the notebook. Description: Correspondence and diary of William Mortimer Baines who came to New Zealand in 1850 on the `Sir Edward Paget'. The papers deal with his interests in mining, timber and land. Includes letters from the Fooks, Dixon and Hunt families of Australia. Includes letters from Maryanne Verdon Baines (1859-1869), mostly to her husband after his departure for England. These are concerned to a large extent with her loneliness in Auckland and with plans for her voyage to England. In addition there are a number of letters written in 1869, by Maryanne and William's children, Fanny, Katherine and Rosa. Source of title - Supplied William Mortimer, came to New Zealand in 1850 on the `Sir Edward Paget'. In 1869 he returned to Britain, although he retained a financial interest in land in New Zealand. He later visited New Zealand in 1864 with Lt Herbert Meade RN, and involved himself in Maori affairs. From Sydney he visited Pacific islands in the Curacoa in 1865 and the Esk in 1866. Description: The story of the Brooke family from Pyrford, Surrey and their immigration to New Zealand in 1910. The two sons, Jack and Cecil, began their farming life in the Kaikoura district as farm cadets. For seven years they farmed at Kaikoura from where the boys went to war and served with the New Zealand Mounted Rifles and later in the 1st New Zealand Machine Gun Squadron. After Cecil Brooke's leave he bought a small dairy farm at Ruakura in 1920 and 5 years later married Dorothy Hutchinson. They farmed at Ruakura for 34 years, and purchased a further 200 acres of peat swamp to break in.
