Original owner was John Cormack who acquired 84 acres at Otepopo (Herbert) and named the property Reay farm after his birthplace in Scotland. He married Janet (Jesse) McMillan in 1853. The couple were childless and on his death in 1875 the farm passed to Jesse's nephew John McMillan who died before he was 21 and without a will. The property reverted to his father Angus McMillan who made it over to his younger sons Angus John and William. In 2008 the farm was owned by John's son Ian McMillan and wife Lois (nee Wilcox), the farming being undertaken by Ian's cousins Ross McMillan and son Barrie. Description: Collection comprises typed transcriptions (analogue & electronic) of three letters from C M Igglesden in Wellington to his father in Chatham, Kent, describing the situation in New Zealand with the start of the New Zealand wars in Taranaki; he discusses the points of view of the settlers, the government, the Maori, his feelings about the destruction caused by war, the place of Christianity, his impression of Donald McLean and related matters. Igglesden kept a diary-letter during his 81-day voyage from England to Melbourne on the Mermaid and the extracts cover his experiences from when he reached the Australian coast in Feb 1856, and also from a letter written after his arrival at Wellington in 1857; he discusses the situation for new migrants. Claxby has been farmed by the Dixon family since 1852 when Marmaduke Dixon took up 6,480 acres between the Waimakariri and Eyre Rivers. In 2005 the property was owned and farmed by Richard Marmaduke Spencer-Bower and his wife Margaret. Richard is the great grandson of Marmaduke Dixon and son of Marmaduke Spencer-Bower.
