Description: `When can you start?', an autobiography of Fry's life up until the 1960s describing his childhood, education, war service and employment as a journalist for the Southern Cross newspaper and the New Zealand Listener and editorial work for A H & A W Reed. Chapter 1 begins with Fry arriving in Wellington from Christchurch in 1948 and he describes his experiences working as a journalist for the Southern Cross newspaper and gives his impressions of Wellington, including being a student at Victoria University College in the late 1940s and early 1950s. He then reverts back to his childhood, describing growing up in Wallsend and Christchurch, attending Papanui Technical College and being apprenticed as an electrician. Chapter 10 ends in 1944 when Fry enrolled in the Royal Navy 21st Fleet Airm draft to be trained in England. Names referred to in the text are entered in the name index. Quantity: 1 folder(s). Description: The journal contains an account of McNab's journey with observations on the places he visited. Includes mention of McNab completing the census aboard the SS `Taiaroa' on the night of 28 Mar 1886. Variations in title - Spine title `Travels in New Zealand' Relationship complexity - Also transcript styled as "Travels in New Zealand" (MS-Papers-6235-3) and microfilm (Micro-MS-0930) In Feb 1886 McNab left his home in Timaru for a tour of the North Island. He travelled by train to Christchurch, by steamer to Wellington and from there by another steamer to Napier. From here he travelled to Taupo via Tauranga by coach and toured the adjacent thermal areas and visited the Pink and White Terraces. Back in Tauranga McNab proceeded by steamer to Auckland from where he took another steamer to New Plymouth. From there he travelled by train to Wanganui and then on to Palmerston North from where he proceeded by coach to Masterton. Arriving in Wellington by train McNab sailed by steamer to Lyttelton and returned home to Timaru by train. Quantity: 1 folder(s). Description: These journals are intermittent in coverage and those for the period 2 Sep 1846-8 Dec 1849 are apparently missing from the General Archives. After Garin went to Nelson he appears to have been an occasional diarist only. The inventory therefore notes nearly all entries from the year 1850 onwards. In addition to the journals there is a precis by Garin of Pompallier's published history of the mission, followed by notes on the history of the Wellington diocese, with particular emphasis on Nelson. Also some notes on Nelson schools and churches, the latest note having been written in 1882. Patricia Diana C Frykberg - Captain William Bendall; his life, his family and his times

Description: Additional material included with the essay includes Captain Bendall's shipboard diary kept on board `City of New York', `Zealandia', 1876; letter from William Edward Bendall re stranding of the `Ellerton', 1883; list of vessels Captain Bendall is known to have been master of; family trees Captain Bendall and his wife Mary, nee Taylor, arrived in Dunedin from Launceston, Tasmania on the `Three Sisters' in 1862. From that date until 1878 he was master of several coastal traders and New Zealand pilot for Pacific steamers. He was appointed Marine Surveyor and Lloyds representative in Wellington and salvaged several wrecked or stranded vessels. The couple had nine children.
