Description: The story of the Brooke family from Pyrford, Surrey and their immigration to New Zealand in 1910. The two sons, Jack and Cecil, began their farming life in the Kaikoura district as farm cadets. For seven years they farmed at Kaikoura from where the boys went to war and served with the New Zealand Mounted Rifles and later in the 1st New Zealand Machine Gun Squadron. After Cecil Brooke's leave he bought a small dairy farm at Ruakura in 1920 and 5 years later married Dorothy Hutchinson. They farmed at Ruakura for 34 years, and purchased a further 200 acres of peat swamp to break in. Description: The papers consist of: Application form submitted by Paul Keith Jarman; history of the Jarman family (written by James Gough Jarman b 1828) and the history of the farm ownership; `James Gough, founder of Nesslea 1865' (written by C J Jarman for the 1965 centennial of Nesslea); paper read before the Courtenay Agricultural & Pastoral Association by James Gough; land titles; photographs. Original owner was James Gough who purchased 128 hectares (known as Nesslea) in 1864. In 2007 the 'Essendon' portion of the estate was owned by his great-greatgrandson Paul Keith Jarman and his wife Ann. Description: The essay details the lives of the Morriss family who have their origins in 1750 in Barnack, Northamptonshire; they crossed the border to Lincolnshire about 1806, mainly into the parishes of Holbeach and Gedney. In 1854 James Morriss and family emigrated to South Australia, settling near Adelaide. The majority of the family remained in Australia. John Frederick Morriss and his brother George Ackland Morriss came to New Zealand in 1901 on the Belimba. His surveying partner was Joseph ward. He took up land in the Omaka Valley in 1846 and named his property Hawkesbury.
