Description: A view looking from the south bank towards the north bank of the Pātea, with a European fortification on the cliff-top opposite. Soldiers are standing at the water's edge and two ships are moored further down the river. The same spot is shown some 20 years earlier in a pencil sketch by Charles Heaphy, 'View on the Patea River, Cooks Straits' (ref. no. A-146-004). Shows a pā on the clifftop, previously identified as Waimate Pā but likely to be Haera Hau Pā. The 1860s camp is also shown from another angle in a watercolour by John Tremenhere Johnston, 'Military camp at the mouth of the Patea River, 1863 or 1864' (ref. no. B-079-022).
