Description: Dismissed carpenters march along Queen Street, Auckland, 22 February 1949, protesting at the result of a dispute with the Auckland Master Builders' Association that left them unemployed. Photographer unidentified. Original caption from the New Zealand Free Lance, March 2. 1949, page 25 reads: Auckland Carpenters' Protest. After a meeting in the Town Hall, Auckland, which about 1,200 carpenters attended to hear speakers trace the history of the dispute with the Auckland Master Builders' Association, about 700 dismissed carpenters marched down Queen Street and up to Albert Park. Description: View from above Grafton Gully, covered in dense bush, with fenced hills and Governor Hobson's grave in the cemetery to the left. Government House is left of centre in the middle distance and three other houses overlooking Grafton Gully are somewhat closer on the right, one of them the home of William Connell, the first Postmaster-General and his wife Isabella. In the distance across the water, the flagstaff marks Mount Victoria, with Rangitoto beyond that. The flat island further off, left of centre is Tiritiri. Painted in early 1843, before the artist moved to an appointment at Russell. A fence has been raised around Governor Hobson's grave. The funeral had taken place in November 1842. Description: An arrangement of text on a silk programme, titled "Third programme". The performance was to be attended by the Marquis of Normanby and his wife, and performers included Mr Charles Keeley (comedian) and Mr Alfred Statham (composer and pianiste). Seventeen items, including bell-ringing and comic songs, were followed by the "laughable farce" "The haunted chateau!", with the main parts being taken by Harry Lynch and Charles Keeley. The vertical borders named the places at which the family had performed: Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia, Tasmania, Fiji, Java, Queensland, New Zealand, Western Australia, California, "etc". Description: Shows Prime Minister John Key scaling Auckland's Sky Tower, which functions as a giant gambling machine. Key pulls the Casino's lever while coins flow out in a steady stream. Refers to controversy surrounding a proposal by Sky City Casinos to build a national convention centre in Auckland in return for being allowed to have more pokie (gaming) machines. The deal will require a law change and has led to allegations by opponents that it will result in more cases of problem gambling. The cartoonist has also noted that 'King Kong styles leaped to mind' Cory Mathis was the winner of the New Zealand Cartoon Archive and the Listener's Young Cartoonist Competition in 2013.
