Railways album 9

Description: Album of publicity photographs including designs for advertisements for use in the new Zealand Railway Magazine; designs for posters for use in Railways Ticket Offices and one for a large neon lighting sign "Suggested `Claude Neon' Display for New Zealand Railway Publicity Department, Wellington. `Travel by train'". One photograph is entitled "`Post' corner 1880. Now site of King's Chambers". A number of images show a [Labour Day?] parade of marching people, and floats some of which are advertising NZ Railways holiday destinations, with slogans reading `Come to Rotorua', `Come to Waitomo', `Come to The Chateau Tongariro'. There are designs of title pages for the New Zealand Railways Magazine; a view of a commemorative key with a sheaf of corn on the handle in a presentation box; and designs for a programme of events surround the laying of the foundation stone for the new Government Railway Station, Wellington, N.Z. by HRH the Duke of Gloucester, December 17th 1934. These are followed by photographs taken during the Duke's tour of New Zealand, including crowd scenes in Wellington, Maori celebrations of welcome at Ngaruawahia, and scenes in the Rotorua thermal area. There are a few individual and group portraits of the management and administrative staff of New Zealand Railways, most unidentified. Description: Album chiefly containing views of the North Island of New Zealand, many taken by professional photographers Wrigglesworth and Binns. Images include one of a cricket match between an English team and the Wellington team, March 23-24 1888, at the Basin Reserve, showing spectators in the foreground, the players on the field, and buildings on the hill behind. There are a number of views of the Whanganui River, including a cave, a canoe with 5 men poling through rapids, a view of the river from Hiruharama, and a waterfall. At the end of the album there are images of Port Said, Malabar, and two newspaper photographs, one of Mrs J Milbourne (nee Maud Beatty, a member of the Pollard Opera Company), and William Lygon, 7th Earl Beauchamp, governor of New South Wales 1899-1900. Some images are annotated with names, dates and scene descriptions. Taken by photographers Wrigglesworth and Binns, Peter Pan Studios (Wellington), and unidentified photographer(s) between circa 1912 and circa 1925. - Images chiefly show family and friends at home and on holiday, and participating in various recreational activities, cricket, tennis, boating, swimming, and visits to the zoo, deer park and seaside. Also includes wedding scenes and adults and children with household pets and horses. Includes women in 1900s and 1920s fashions, wearing fur coats, cloche hats and carrying parasols. - Identifiable images include: the Hydro Grand Hotel, Timaru; the gravestone of Elizabeth, wife of Robert A Lilley (died 30 Nov 1925); and New Plymouth city and Pukekura Park. Also includes the post office, water tower, the band rotunda and tea kiosk in King Edward Park in Hawera, and St Pauls Church in Normanby. Also includes the old Government Buildings and Pipitea Wharf sheds in Wellington; the HMS 'Chatham'; Auckland city and harbour; and three ladies in a airship theme peep board at the New Zealand and South Seas International Exhibition in Dunedin 1925-1926. - Images of identifiable people include: Ken Impett (?), Frank Fahey, G Nairn, T Brankin in army uniform (circa World War One).
