Description: Interview with Peter Beams, born in Clapham, London in 1929. Talks about his family background, early life and schooling in Glasgow and weekends at Loch Lomond. Recalls his father built an Anderson air raid shelter in their back garden. Comments on being evacuated to New Zealand with his two older brothers in 1940, and not bringing any personal items with them. Refers to sailing on the SS Ruahine and suffering from sea sickness. Recalls the ship being visited in Wellington by prime minister Peter Fraser. Talks about being taken with his brothers to a magnificant house (Tudor House) in Park Road, Belmont to stay with George and Ethel Seers. Mentions the history of the house which was owned by General Motors at the time. Describes their accomodation and mentions the cook Betty Verity and parlour maid Jean Hyde. Talks about food, eating mostly in the servants' quarters, tennis, billiards, entertainment and discipline. Comments on spending a lot of time walking the hills, walking the dog and playing war games with friends. Refers to being taught to wait on table. Reflects that he and his brothers were fairly self-sufficient because they were not used to closeness in their family. Refers to attending Hutt Central School and later Nelson College, and talks about life there as a boarder. Mentions that he was not really concerned with news of the war but kept up with it. Recalls hearing of Pearl Harbour, submarine sightings around New Zealand, and the Americans having ammunition dumps in the Western Hutt Hills. Recalls the 1942 earthquake. Comments that he was required to return to Britain at the end of the war but having "nowhere to go home for". Refers to sailing with one brother on the SS Rangitata via the Suez Canal and being met by their father who was a stranger to them. Comments that their parents were separated and he met his mother later. Refers to working on a farm until he was called up for National Service in 1947. Comments on serving in Egypt and Malaya, being demobbed in Sydney and returning to New Zealand in 1950 after recovering from malaria. Talks about going back to live with the Seers whom he had kept in contact with. Discusses working for Wright Stephenson & Co (stock and station agents) and his subsequent career including working at General Motors and finally starting his own sign company. Mentions marrying his wife Mona Cadwallader in 1953 and building their house. Refers to meeting his mother and brother Tony in England in 1985, and also meeting his father again once they located him. Comments on a memoir he was writing about his own experiences. Reflects being grateful for the experiences and opportunities he has had that would not otherwise have been available to him, but regrets the lack of a family life when young. Description: Photographs relating to the life of Bryan Scoullar, taken ca 1917-2010, particularly his service in the army during World War II. Bryan Scoullar collected all the images and took some of them. Images are arranged in a loose chronological order, and contain: Family photographs, circa 1917-1941, showing his mother Genevieve (nee Pope), his father Arthur, and his brother Patrick. Snapshots of the family are taken at the family residence in Wellington and during outings and holidays in New Zealand. Includes images of Patrick during the war, at home on leave, and overseas. Two school photographs taken at Marist Brothers' School, Wellington, probably of Patrick or Bryan. Photographs related to Bryan Scoullar's military service in North Africa during World War II. These are taken and collected in Egypt, Syria, and the Western Desert, ca 1941-1942. There are also some images taken during his training at Trentham army camp ca 1940, and documenting journey on board ship 'Nieue Amsterdam'. Contains images of patients, staff and activities at No. 3 General Hospital, Egypt, where he worked as an orderly. Description: A man with a mine detector leans over the side of his boat trying to locate WW2 mines that they fear could be activated by magnetic or acoustic activity. Their search ends suddenly as a boatload of raucous young people with deafening music set off a bomb and are lifted high out of the water. Refers to the search for a World War 2 minefield believed to have been laid off the entrance to Lyttelton Harbour on Banks Peninsula. The 10 mines, thought to weigh up to 1000kg each, were apparently laid by the German minelayer, Adjutant, in June, 1941.They were not moored but lay on the seabed and were detonated by the acoustic or magnetic activity of ships passing overhead. We've decided to extend the funding of old soldiers' travel, to old battle sites, to include...' Then in the lower frame Wayne Mapp, Minister of Defence, is seen as he concludes '...veterans of the First World War, the Boer War and the Maori Wars!'. Context - Old soldiers will get more money to attend commemorations after the Government was left red-faced over the treatment of Battle of Crete veterans this year. The move comes after a Weekend Herald report highlighted the superior treatment Australian veterans received during Crete's 70th anniversary. They stayed in the same hotels as officials and received free healthcare. New Zealand veterans got $2000 while Dr Mapp stayed in superior hotels at a cost of $26,000 to the taxpayer. The point made in the cartoon is that this won't cost the government much because there are relatively few soldiers who fought in WW2 who are still alive.
