Steps lead up a hill to the left, and shops and businesses are in the ground floor, including a chemist's shop. The names Davis, J Kirby and Mr J Hewit are visible. A gas street lamp is on the near street corner in the right foreground Mr J G L Hewett was practising as a solicitor in Dunedin by 1898. The premises depicted may be his Drawn on the back of a folio-sized printed sheet of paper for the Standard Property Investment Society, Howorth and Hodgkins, Solicitors, Dunedin. Notes by the artist on the verso indicate that he used only blue, chrome yellow, burnt umber and chinese white - "no other pigments whatever". Date estimated from the contents of a newspaper extract from the Thames Star, 31 December 1894, page 2, which states: "Sir, I know a man who went by the name of Teddy Monkhouse, who was doing a bit of painting and a property man at Johnny Hall's old American Theatre, at Shortland, in 1868.
