Description: Comprises diary or report of a surveying expedition 27 Oct-21 Dec (nd) which left Nelson for the Marlborough Sounds via the Boulder Bank, Croiselles, Anakiwa, the Rai and Whangamoa in which Paske (presumably the writer) mentions meeting settlers and local Maori, food collected and eaten (including fuschia berries), records the death of Simon (a Maori) and the Maori reaction to it and other details. Letters from Lucy Jervois, possibly Paske's aunt, to her sister and brother re Paske's death (12 Jun 1886), and to her sister-in-law Amelia re same (19 Jun 1886); letter from Mr Jervois probably to Paske (snr). Includes court record re Paske being intestate. Also contains `Report on the surveys of New Zealand 1885-1886', by James McKerrow, referring to the death of Paske on a surveying expedition. Description: Depicts the lower half of North Island from approximately Hamilton to Gisborne, referred to as Province of North Durham, also the top half of South Island from approximately Greymouth across to Kaikoura, referred to as Province of South Durham. The map is annotated 'The dotted line denotes the boundaries of the provinces' and this line is marked diagonally between Pt. Tebouka kore in the Wellington Region and a point north of Tui Bay in the Taranaki Region. Some bays are named as are points including Kidnappers Pt., and capes including Foulwind, Farewell, Palliser and Egmont. Also named are Queen Charlotte Sound, Cook's Strait, Hawke Bay and the islands D'Urville, Kapiti, Mana and Sugarloaf. Mount Egmont, Ruapehu and Tonga Volcano are marked. Original photograph of this map is larger than this copy. Information found in original card index record. Explanation on reverse as follows: Photograph of Chaffer's map of New Zealand Company's purchases, 1839. Received from Dr. Bett about March 27, 1945. Description: Sketch map of the coast to the south and north of the mouth of the Whakapohai River. Haihai is marked on the map to the south. To the north the only named feature is Taura o te Weka. Haast has indicated the location of mussels, seals, paua and sandy beaches; as well as a track from `the ford' at Haihai extending north along the coast to the mouth of the river, then along the south bank of the river, crossing upstream at a point marked `good whare', then an inland route crossing to the coast and continuing to Taura o te Weka. Description: Sketch map of the coast in the vicinity of Little Wanganui River and Karamea. At the far southend of the map is an area marked `Otahu hills'; to the north of which is a river `Turipohu [?]'. Further north is the [Little] Wanganui River, and Karamea and Oparara, both surrounded by mud flats. At the north end of the map is an area marked `mussels'. Description: A woman driving a trap with two horses, drawn over a sketch map showing the Kotukutuku Stream and (possibly) the Taukete Stream, with blocks of land subdivided and assigned to a number of owners with the names George, Beard, Ellis, Selwyn and Todd. The numbers assigned to each block are either prices or the acreage. They range from 340 to 3000. The name Taukete was not traceable in maps and gazetteers. There are several Kotukutuku Streams, mostly in remote areas of the Urewera Ranges. The most likely site appears to be a stream of this name on flatter land in Central Hawkes Bay, south of Kereru.
