Description: Comprises letters from William Webb to his mother and sister, Ellen, describing his life and activities from his various postings in Katikati (briefly), Waipukurau and Napier as a telegraph operator. Also, letters from William Webb's nephew, Arthur Foote, to his family from France and Sling Camp during World War I, together with greeting and christmas cards of that era. Source of title - Supplied William and Ellen Webb, son of William Webb and Frances Harris, who were originally from Truro, Cornwall, were born in Hokitika. William became a telegraph operator with the Post Office and worked in Kumara, Waipukurau and Napier. Arthur Foote was the son of Ellen and nephew of William Webb. Description: Diary (original and typed transcript) kept by Samson during the voyage from England to Napier on the "Countess of Kintore", 1875. Includes photographs of Samson & his wife, a letter of instruction to him while he captained a ship from Archangel, Russia to the island of Jersey and background notes by J L Cameron, a grandson. The diary provides a day-to-day description of the progress of the ship, and weather conditions. Samson gives details of the food served, and notes the incidence of illness and death during the voyage. He also describes the actions of passengers and crew, events of interest, and the landing at Napier Relationship complexity - Typed transcript of the shipboard diary at MS-Papers-2331 Captain Samson was a resident of St Helier, Jersey. In 1870 he married Mary Laurens. They emigrated to New Zealand in 1875 to join a group of Channel Islanders settled at Napier. They sailed from England on 16 March aboard The Countess of Kintore. Percy Bush stands by police as anti-apartheid demonstrators march by. Photographs taken 25 August by an Evening Post staff photographer. Percy Bush had earlier addressed the protesters in both Maori and English expressing his opposition to apartheid but pointing out that he had come to see his adopted son play the Springboks.
