Description: Sketches depicting incidents arising out of a taua or raiding party visiting Parawera settlement to exact revenge after a case of adultery. The marae, various groupings of iwi, dances, fights, haka, horseriding, and competitions are depicted, along with a visit from the police. The Parawera group were Ngati Apakura, Te Wherowhero's iwi, and the visitors in search of payment were Ngati Raukawa, Ngati Hourua and Ngati Koroki. Ngati Haua are also mentioned in one sketch. See covering letter of 17 November 1913 in MS 57, Folder 64. A typescript copy is held with the drawings in Box A-081. Mair ironically compares the artist to the French portraitist of Napoleon, Jean Louis Ernest Meissonier

This sketchbook contains many of the preliminary sketches for the more finished studio drawings in the Library's two large albums, E-452-f & E-453-f Quantity: 1 sketchbook(s) (33 pencil & watercolour, 15 pencil in album stored with notebook in half blue morocco & linen case). Description: Contains seven mounted photographs, taken on 24th March 1882. Four of these are 1/2-004680 and 004681 and 1/2-004683 and 004684 which are halves of two very similar panoramas of Lyttelton harbour taken from the same point and showing the graving dock in the foreground. They both name the same ships moored in the harbour which are: Carnarvon Castle, Pet, Midlothian, Guy Mannering, Harbour Board's dredge and barge, Ione, Wigtonshire, Duchess of Argyle, Inch Murren, Cairnbulg, Seriol Wyn, Glenburn, Perthshire, Alexa, Brilliant, Lurline, Mataura, Duncraig, Enterpe, City of Perth, Lock Eck, Roman Empire, Loch Dee, British Yeoman, Glamis, Gareloch and Woollahra. Also included are two pictures of the graving dock and a view of reclaimed land at the edge of the harbour. Photographer unidentified. Quantity: 7 b&w original photographic print(s). Physical Description: Album with folded green binding, tied with canvas ribbon, containing seven photographs. Provenance: From the library of Alexander Horsburgh Turnbull. Description: Scenes from the Northland campaign of the New Zealand wars, 1845-46, other Northland views, portrait of Hone Heke. Includes two items by unidentified artists, and a lithograph of a map by John Nops. Inscriptions: Title on spine: Bridge & Williams - Maori war sketches. Cyprian Bridge and John Williams collaborated in documenting events of the war in the far north. Quantity: 1 sketchbook(s). Physical Description: 2 lithographs, 4 drawings, 5 watercolour paintings, in album 344 x 380 mm, 1/2 brown calf, brown buckram. Provenance: Collection of Alexander Horsburgh Turnbull with an inscription in his hand inside the original front cover (loose at top of box A-079). Appears to be his 'New Zealand album containing 16 original sketches, 1845-6', purchased from W. Brown of Edinburgh, 19 July 1893 for £8 (letters of A H Turnbull). Transfers: A watercolour by Cuthbert Clarke showing an 1849 feast in the Bay of Islands removed from this album and located at B-030-007. An ink and wash drawing by John Williams, 'Stern of a canoe' now located at A-079-015 shows as an offset print on a page of the original binding - Watercolour on p. 5 (dimensions 200 x 280 mm) removed and transferred to box A-079-006.
