Description: Comprises the records of Turakina Māori Girls College namely: minute books, 1928-1970; school registers of attendance, 1905-ca 1972; daily attendance registers, 1905-1963; inspector's reports, 1908-1966 (incomplete); and other administrative and financial records. Also includes: - 27 school building plans and alterations dated between 1927 and 1975. - two pieces of taniko weaving and one cloth badge worked by Mrs Mairatea Tahiwi - a selection of school photographs (photographic prints, slide transparencies, and negatives) taken between 1905 and 1977. Title supplied by Library. Relationship complexity - A 16mm film of the School has been transferred to the New Zealand Film Archive by the School. Turakina Māori Girls' College was a Presbyterian boarding school for young Māori women. It was established in 1905. The Rev H J Fletcher, missionary to Māori at Taupo, Mrs Gordon of Marton (wife of the Convenor of Māori Missions) and Miss MacKellar were instrumental in starting the College. The first principal was Mr A G Hamilton, who had previously worked with Māori pupils on the East Coast and at Tokaanu. Mrs Hamilton was the schools first Matron and their daughters Maude, Clarice and Coralie assisted with teaching and home duties in the school. The Hamilton's remained at the school for 14 years. March 1928 saw the move of the College to its present site in Marton where the teaching of domestic skills remained high priority and continued to do so until 1950. During the period 1905-1980, the College was an Independent Private School, but in 1981 was integrated into the State system. The roll of the School is limited by this to 160 pupils, all of whom are boarders. Between 1981 and 1986 much of the school was upgraded. The school continued its strong emphasis on taha Māori and ta Wairua until its closure in 2016. Description: Original log book of an account of Jonas Eastwood Woodhouse of his journey from London, England to Southland, New Zealand on board the 'New Great Britain' in 1863. Also a typed transcript of the same. Woodhouse describes life on board the ship in detail, including the weather, food, entertainment, equator crossing celebrations, and deaths of other passengers. He also describes sailing past Solander and Steward [Stewart?] Islands and arriving in Southland where they were met by a pilot ship and assessed for quarantine. He gives his impressions of the bush, houses, gardens, animals, and pig hunting that he could see from the ship before they landed. Also includes a list of passengers on the ship, organised by county and country, and the words to 'Song of the New Great Britain' composed by Mr Robert Wotton - another passenger on the ship. Also includes letters addressed to Mr F R Woodhouse (a great grandson of Woodhouse and previous owner of the book) in relation to the log book (letters dated 1956, 1976, and 1981). Description: Comprises holograph diary kept by P Davy on the `Ruahine' and during his tour of New Zealand. After disembarking at Wellington where he visited relatives he toured to other parts of New Zealand. He describes a gathering of Maori following the settlement of fishing rights on Lake Wairarapa, a visit to a freezing works at Belfast, gold mining on the West Coast and Rotorua where he visited a pa, saw geysers and bathed in the hot pools. His journal ends on the return journey to England when staying at Sydney. Also includes transcript of part of the diary (16 Nov 1895-3 Jan 1896). The writer of the diary is presumed to be P Davy, a passenger on the `Ruahine'; he visited members of the Davy family while in Wellington. He was probably one of the Devonshire Davys, a nephew of George Boutflower Davy, an official of the Land Registration Court of NZ, and the son of Edward Davy (1806-1885), an experimental chemist who emigrated to Australia.
