Description: Photographs taken by Daniel Mundy in the 1860s. All but one were taken in the South Island. Captions hand-written by Mundy on verso of each page. (Information from handwriting and signature `D.L.M.' in Mundy Album III, p 51). The North Island view was taken in Napier, and shows a two-storeyed house with quoinings, a horse-drawn coach outside, and to the right there is a wooden church. South Island views include many landscapes; hotels; the Christchurch government buildings, the Victoria Bridge, High Street and Cashel Street; and three sheep stations. Two are well-known, Benmore Station and Gramere Station (then known as Hawden's Station [i.e. Hawdon's Station]. The third is possibly that of George Gilbert Suman [the hand-written description appears to be `Sumans Station' at German Bay, and according to Wise's Post Office Directory, William Gilbert Suman lived in German Bay in 1875). Description: Vigors went to Australia with the 11th Regiment of Foot, in 1846. The diary records a voyage to Auckland, Whangaroa, New Hebrides, Solomon Islands, New Caledonia and Fiji, with detailed descriptions of places and peoples visited. The manuscript includes illustrative work by Vigors in ink, pencil and watercolour, of land and geographical features, activities and artifacts of Maori life and culture, and of the culture of the various Pacific peoples he encountered and named portraits of persons encountered; annotated paper from New South Wales Parliament re the Botanic Gardens, Sydney; clippings; and letter in French. The `Havannah' was commanded by Captain Erskine A listing of the holdings of the Public Record Office of Ireland relating to Philip Vigors is located in the back file for this collection Source of title - Title page Relationship complexity - Glass plate negatives of illustrations within the volume are held in the Photographic Archve collection (PAColl-6719). These appear to have been taken for inclusion in the 1924 typescript transcript of the journal (qMS-2082-2084). Description: Looking across the harbour out to the entrance, with Paratutai Rock to the north of the entrance. A group of three people, possibly two Maori (dressed in cloaks) and a European (with broad-brimmed hat and staff) are standing looking towards the sea. On the verso of the drawing is a map 'View of the entrance to the harbour of Manukao from Puponga Head'. It shows the harbour bar, Puponga Head, an anchorage just east of the Head and opposite Puponga Point a bay with an illegible inscription, possibly Orua Bay and 'Missionary ...' Dr Johnson was part of Lady Franklin's party from Auckland in April 1841, which visited Manukau Heads, Orua and James Hamlin's mission station, on the way to Waikato Heads and Rev Maunsell's Mission Station. Description: Shows a long view of the Southern Alps, seen from South Westland, with the peaks marked. Mt [Elie de] Beaumont and the Agassiz Glacier are on the left (above Franz Josef Glacier, which is not visible), followed by Mount De la Beche. Mount Cook is the tallest peak, roughly in the centre, the Hooker Range further to the right, Mount Hooker, the 'Gray Range' in the distance to the far right, ending in the sea. The moraine noted by Haast indicates that the Franz Josef Glacier had reached at least as far as the mouth of the Waiho River in a past era. Other Titles - Waiho River Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Description: Album compiled in the late 1850s and early 1860s by James Coutts Crawford (1817-1889). The photographs fall into distinct groups, interspersed through the album, as follows: Portraits of the Dundas and Moreton families, and scenes in Anverara, Dalmally, Overton and other localities in Scotland, as well as views of Barton Court, Tortworth Court (Gloucestershire) and Kintbury (Berkshire) in England. These photographs were probably taken during Crawford's residence in England during the 1850s. Photographs of the Crawford, Clifford, Weld and Levin families in Wellington, and views around Molesworth, Mulgrave and Hobson Streets, taken in the late 1850s and early 1860s. The photographer is unknown, but possibly Crawford himself. Views of Wellington from the Terrace, taken in 1858 by the Reverend Arthur Stock (1823-1901).
