Description: Hand drawn topographical map, by Henry Hill, of the lower area of the Kaingaroa tableland including Lake Taupo. Main roads with distances between settlements, old native tracks and rivers are named. Areas relating to artesian water prospects are marked as is a sulphur deposit near Taupo. Routes taken by the travellers - 1841 Diffenbach [i.e. Dieffenbach], 1841-2 Colenso and 1859-50 Governor Grey (Sir George) are marked. Stations, homesteads and an hotel are named. Includes a references key. Notes include historical, legendary and geological information. See records for other material collected by Henry Hill. Names include: Cox, Hitere, Hillier, Ihaia te Waru, Yarle. A note in the bottom right corner states: This map of the Taupo-Kaingaroa tableland illustrates Mr H. Description: Shows Ensign Best (or Ernst Dieffenbach) on left with cap, Captain Symonds in cape. Te Waru's daughter is being denounced for murder. Te Waru is standing against a background of a carved memorial, holding his daughter by her arm. Other Maori men and women are seated in a group around Te Waru and his daughter. There is a pataka (storehouse) to the left and a gourd is being emptied onto a fire on the far right. Engraving by Whitby, after a sketch by J.J. Merrett. Derived from a sketch by J.J. Merrett, made on a trip with Best, Symonds & Dieffenbach, 1841. Description: Shows Richard Barrett and Dr Dieffenback seated outside a wooden hut on the side of a cliff. There is a smaller shelter on the cliff above them with two Maori saeted inside. A group of Maori (men, woman with child on her back and small boy) are walking up carrying fish and birds. Lower down the slope a man and his dog are seated looking out to sea. Description: Shows Te Waru denouncing his daughter for murder of a slave to Pakeha visitors Ensign Best (or Captain Symonds) who is standing on the far left, Ernest Dieffenbach is closer on the left wearing a cloak and broad-brimmed hat. Te Waru is standing in front of an elaborate carving, his daughter standing at his left hand and seated Maori surrounding them After a sketch by J J Merrett made on a trip with Best, Symonds and Dieffenbach to Waipa in 1841.
