From: Hawkey, Allan Charles, 1941- :[Digital cartoons published in the Waikato Times].
Reference: DCDL-0013500
Description: The cartoon shows a typical scene in the 'Maungatautari Ecological Island Trust' park. A pair of Takahe are taking their chick for a walk in its buggy and a curious kiwi asks them whether the chick is a boy or a girl. One of the takahes says they don't know until they organise a DNA check on a feather sample and the other wonders how they managed in the good old days. The Maungatautari Ecological Island Trust was established to lead a community project to restore the ecology of Maungatautari, a forested volcanic cone rising above the Waikato basin near Cambridge. Their vision is to remove, forever, introduced mammalian pests and predators from Maungatautari, and restore to the forest a healthy diversity of indigenous plants and animals not seen in our lifetime. This has involved the construction of 47 km of totally mammal proof fence and the eradication of 15 species of introduced mammals. At 3400 ha, it is the largest project of this type on mainland New Zealand and possibly in the world. Quantity: 1 digital cartoon(s).
