Description: View of the Ongarue River with Maori kainga [village] on the far bank. On the river a man and a woman paddle a Maori canoe while another canoe is tied up on the far shore of the river. The kainga is on the terrace immediatedly above the bank in the midground. Here four people are depicted, one sitting tending an open fire and three others watching from beside a large whare, possibly a whare whakairo [meeting house].
