Context: Police released files from their investigation into two $25,000 donations from German multi-millionaire Kim Dotcom and a $15,000 donation from SkyCity towards Banks 2010 Auckland mayoralty campaign, which were all registered as anonymous. Statements from Dotcom show Banks told him: "I want to help you Kim and I can help you more effectively if no-one knows about this donation." They also show Banks twice confirmed he received the donation (Stuff 13 September 2012). Context: A series of scandals involving John Banks increasingly made him a liability to the Key-led National Government. There were calls for Key to remove Banks as coalition partner in the government.
