The view is probably taken in the spring, with blossom visible on the trees in the foreground The first Townend Glasshouse, an orchid and begonia house, was left to the city by Annie Quayle Townend in 1914. It originally stood in the grounds of Holly Lea, a large Christchurch property, but was moved to the Botanical Gardens, being replaced by the current Townend Glasshouse building in 1955 Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Description: View looking south east across Kelburn, showing work on the Botanic Gardens, including the demolition of the ridge (later the site of Magpie Lawn) and the filling of Glenmore Gully by unemployment relief labour. Taken by an unidentified photographer, circa 1928. Note on back of file print reads: Date - ca 1928. Wgtn Botanic Garden. Glenmore hills looking south east across Kelburn. Work is underway demolishing he ridge (now the site of Magpie Lawn) and filling the Glenmore Gully. This was part of a larger project which involved widening Glenmore Street and Tinakori Road to conform with the newly formed Bowen Street. The entire frontage of the Botanic Garden was remodelled between 1927 and 1930. The piping of the stream, the filling of the gully and the leveling of Magpie Lawn had been completed by December 1928. The work was carried out by unemployment relief labourr. (Info from Walter Cook 1988). Quantity: 1 b&w original negative(s).
