Artist unknown :Maori Conference ; before ; after. [1860 or ca 1880?]
Date: 1879 - 1860 - 1881
By: Forbes, David W, active 1950s-2000s
Reference: A-279-003
Description: A cartoon showing a Maori man about to tuck into an enormous plum pudding with a large plate of meat to one side, in the "before" view; and looking very well-fed and fat with many empty plates on the table in the "after" view. He is seated in a room with leadlight windows. The room with leadlight windows may be the Melanesian Mission building at Kohimarama (Mission Bay) where Governor Gore Browne convened a Maori Conference in 1860. Another possibility is that the conference is one of the series of conferences at Orakei in 1879, 1880 and 1881, to discuss and ratify the terms of the Treaty of Waitangi, 1840. The latter conferences were held in a building constructed by Paora Tuhaere, probably lacking leadlight windows. The image implies that the Conference was simply an excuse for gluttony. Inscriptions: Recto - above & below image: title Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Physical Description: Sepia ink on cream wove paper 121 x 193 mm Provenance: Purchased from a book dealer (Mr Wreden) in Palo Alto, California, by David Forbes, 1970s.

Description: An extensive view of the Wairarapa Plain with Wairarapa Lake on the left, Rimutaka Range and Tararua Ranges in the background. A boar hunt is underway in the foreground, with one Maori man and a dog to the right. The Maori man is dressed in traditional costume, and appears to be carrying a rope. Bracken and ferns in the foreground and clumps of bush on the plain. The accompanying text reads: This district lies about fifty miles from Wellington by the nearest road. Mr Charles Kettle, one of the Company's Assistant-Surveyors, ascended the Manawatu River, which flows along the other side of the Tararua Mountains, and entered this plain by rounding the low spurs at the extreme right of the view. The forest consists of the largest trees. The open tracts are covered with grass, feern and tutu bushes. Wild hogs abound in this plain. The Ruamahanga flows through the midst of it, and passes through Lake Wairarapa into Palliser Bay. The plain of the Ruamahanga is about sixty miles in length, with an average breadth of twelve miles. There is one small native village at its northern extremity, and another on the beach at Palliser Bay, as well as a whaling station supplied from Wellington. Lake Wairarapa is ten miles long, and from two to three miles broad. Between the lake and the sea several settlers from Wellington have recently squatted with large herds of cattle, which they drove along the sea-coast. Quantity: 1 colour art print(s). London, Lithographed and Published under the auspices of the New Zealand Association by Robert Martin & Co, 1838

Description: A European man, probably Earle himself, seated on the banks of a stream, gazing towards a Maori village backed by a kauri forest. A Maori man is pointing towards the village, another is carrying Earle's baggage and two more have crossed the stream towards the village. Earle's text explains: "After ascending this beautiful river [the Waihou River, Hokianga] about 40 miles, and at a distance of two miles from the river is this village. It is literally buried in a forest, and is a country residence of Patuoni [Patuone], the chief of the district; here he plants his potatoes, cumera [kumara], and maize, which arrive at a perfection never before witnessed. The mighty forest by which the village is surrounded consists chiefly of cowdie [kauri], the largest and most valuable of the New Zealand trees. We halted at this village on our way to the Bay of Island, and were kindly entertained by the chief" [1827] Other Titles - Kauri Quantity: 1 colour art print(s).
