Description: Mount Taranaki in the background to the left, a river mouth in the foreground, with a pā atop an island in the centre of the rivermouth, between cliffs on both shores. There is also a pā on top of the cliff to the left. Possibly identified as Pātea, although the location of Te Rangatapu pā is recorded as Ōhawe. The place named Te Rangatapu pā is no longer occupied, it may have been the name of the pair of pā. Description: Soldiers within an earthen rampart, with two standing guard, gazing out across a plain towards low hills. Within the shelter of the rampart are several tents, two with soldiers reclining inside them, one with a standing soldier leaning against it, and another seated soldier in front of it, smoking a pipe. Three rifles are stacked upright together in the centre. Probably a South Taranaki scene, the drawings are mounted in the album in chronolical order and those immediately before and after are of Taranaki Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Description: Diary entries for 16 December 1846 through to 9 January 1847, and 17-19 April 1847, which includes detailed descriptions of activities around New Plymouth and at Maori settlements to the south (the 18-20 December portions of which are also copied into MS-1217). Included are long passages of reminiscences recounted to McLean by a Mr Bosworth whose trading post near Patea McLean stayed with for several days, from 22-24 December, on the way south. Bosworth had been living in New Zealand for 19 years and McLean was fascinated by his fund of stories. Included are loose pages with rough notes giving diary entries and lists of documents for late 1844. Diary, outwards letters and accounts

Description: Includes diary entries for 12-14 November and 18-19 December 1846, describing a journey amongst Maori settlements to the south of New Plymouth, and activities in and around New Plymouth. Also includes drafts of instructions to Henry Halse, his subordinate at New Plymouth, and drafts of reports to his superior. At the back of the book are a record of his 1845 accounts with William Black for various supplies. The following volume, MS-1218, contains another draft of the same diary entries for December, but starting earlier, and going right through to 9 January 1847. Likely to be a river in South Taranaki, or North of Wanganui, although not as far north as the Patea River, given the small size of Mount Taranaki in the distance. Possibly the Waitotara River.
