Artist unknown :[HMS Galatea with Royal Party anchored off Kororareka, Russell, Bay of ...

Date: 1869

By: Chevalier, Nicholas, 1828-1902; Hoyte, John Barr Clark, 1835-1913; Crowder, John, active 1986-2000

Reference: B-163-013

Description: Shows a view from near Flagstaff Hill, looking down on Russell and the Bay of Islands, with nine sailing ships with many flags anchored off the bay and one smaller steamship nearing the shore. Paihia is in the background, across the water Attributed by previous owner to Nicholas Chevalier who was an artist on an earlier voyage with the Duke of Edinburgh. However Chevalier was not on the 1869 voyage and the style of the work does not appear to be his. There is no known record of a visit by the Galatea to the Bay of Islands. The ship left Auckland and proceeded to Tahiti. It may have called at the Bay of Islands en route. Inscriptions: No inscriptions on the work itself. Title from mat (discarded by the Library) supplied by a previous dealer. There is an almost identical work in the collection of Auckland Public Library, attributed to J C Hoyte. It is unsigned. The title assigned to it is Looking southwest from Flagstaff Hill over Kororareka. It was formerly in the collection of the Old Colonists Museum, and came into the Library when the Museum closed in 1957. The ships at anchor are assumed to be the American whaling fleet. There are seven ships at anchor. A further, almost identical version of this painting has been identified, housed at the New Bedford Whaling Museum, Massachusetts, in the United States. It is signed and dated 'C.H. [Kennett] Watkins / 1874', with reference number 2001.100.4397. (Information supplied by Lindsay Alexander, Russell, October 2014). Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour, 248 x 347 mm. Provenance: Previously owned by John Crowder, Trinity House, Waikawa, Marlborough. Title and date suggested by John Crowder.

Artist unknown :Native fort in New Zealand. London, New Zealand Association, 1837.

Date: 1837

From: Wakefield, Edward Gibbon, 1796-1862 :The British colonisation of New Zealand; being an account of the principles, objects and plans of the New Zealand Association [by E. G. Wakefield and John Ward]. London, New Zealand Association, 1837.

By: Read, Richard, 1765?-1843?

Reference: PUBL-0112-front

Description: A rangatira standing with cloak and taiaha in his right hand, framed by tall trees, and with a headland surmounted by a pa in the background. The Maori figure is reproduced in larger form on p. 128 of the same volume and is a redrawing of Richard Read's 'Tetoro, a chief of New Zealand' first published in 1823. The background landscape is possibly intended to represent the Bay of Islands, and the manner of drawing pataka is reminiscent of the work of Augustus Earle, who is the source of two other illustrations in this book. Read's engraving was the frontispiece to Cruise, R. A. Journal of 10 months residence in New Zealand. (London, 1823). The image of Tetoro bears a strong resemblance to 'A chief of New Zealand' published in John Liddiard Nicholas' Narrative of a voyage to New Zealand (London, 1817), which in turn appears to be derived from Sydney Parkinson's 'A New Zealand warrior in his proper dress', first published in the 1770s after James Cook's first voyage to New Zealand in 1769. Extended Title - From Wakefield, E. G. & John Ward. The British colonisation of New Zealand. London, John Parker, 1837. Frontispiece Quantity: 1 b&w art print(s).
