Description: The upper image shows a small wooden building, described as 'Isaac's office' with the sign Cookson & Bowler on the side of it. It is viewed from one end, and has a picket fence and another small house beyond it. In the lower half is the another small wooden dwelling. It is seen from the front and has two doors and two windows, with steps leading up a bank to the two doors. The left-hand side is marked ITC [Isaac Thomas Cookson], the right WJH [William John Warburton Hamilton]. The lower drawing is also annotated 'Our first house. We were here 5 months from September 6th 1851 to February 6th 1852' Attribution of this sketchbook to Janetta Maria Cookson based on this sketch since Cookson's wife was with him in Lyttelton at this date. She was the daughter of a baronet, Sir Matthew Ridley. Inscriptions: Recto - beneath image - Our first home. We were here 5 months from September 6th 1851 to February 6th 1852.. House is identified as belonging to Isaac Cookson (left-hand side), and W J Hamilton (right-hand side). Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Description: View looking down onto Lake Rotorua, with Mokoia in the distance. The Ohinemutu peninsula is on the right with steam rising from amongst the Maori whare. In the foreground is a whare on the left, a palisade and several Maori figures. Probably copied from a drawing by John Johnson or a copy of that drawing by Cuthbert Clarke. See Cuthbert Clarke;s 'Ohinemotu. From an outline by Dr Johnson [1849]' a conte drawing in the British Library (Add. MS 19954, folio 29, no. 31) of which the Turnbull holds a photograph. Description: View from the Paremata side of Porirua Harbour, looking towards Whitirea Peninsula and Mana, with a wooden structure in the foreground and the buildings of Toms' whaling station in the background. 'Old Camp' is marked. The settlement on the opposite headland may be Kaiaua or Kahotea, one of several old Ngati Toa kainga along that shoreline. However it seems more likely to be European houses by 1861. The house of Lieutenant William Servantes was at the entrance to the harbour and is likely to be one of those shown at the foot of the hill opposite in the left-hand side of the view.
