Description: Copied in 1934, this map is a copy of an original plan of an old land claim, plan 132, claim no. 114 of J.R. Clendon's purchase in 1832. The boundaries of this land claim follow the coastline, include the small settlement and follow the existing boundary line as drawn on a published base map. This base map is referred to as Plan A and bears the note 'Boundary common to Plan B'. Pole A and Pole B have survey lines drawn to various parts of the boundary. The Government House and Gaol are named and some other buildings are marked. The site of the Old Camp is included. Description: Map of North Island, South Island, Stewart Island of New Zealand with numerous named small islands. Rivers, settlements, cities and towns are named, as are coastal features such as bays, capes, points, heads, rocks, sounds, inlets. Principal lighthouses are marked. Lit lighthouses are also recorded. Points of shipwrecks are marked with the name and type of ship, the date of shipwreck and lives lost. Insets include lists of shipwrecks with references to places and points of shipwreck. Dates range from September 1795 - 2 March 1936. Date changed from [1935?] to [1936] based on the fact that the map includes a ship wreck from March 1936 and Halse died in 1936. 21 October 2016. Quantity: 1 manuscript map(s). Description: Plan of the proposed city of Wellington that was to be located near the mouth of the Hutt River and Petone, Lower Hutt City. The area covers 1361 acres, exclusive of streets and terraces, with 261 acres for government purposes, squares, public buildings, hospitals, schools, markets, wharves, and 1100 acres for settlers for building purposes. The town is laid out in a grid pattern, with the Hutt River running through the centre, and a terrace around the periphery. Several blocks on the plan are allocated for specific purposes, such as government offices, prison, public baths, museum, barracks, president's palace, college of surgeons. Four cemeteries are proposed on the corners of the plan, each of eight acres. Note on mount reads: This proposal was for the establishment of Wellington on the banks of the Hutt River. See also associated lettered at AT 3/1/6, regarding Cobham and the map. This edition is a photocopy from a specially drawn copy, held formally in Government House, Wellington. Catalogue card states a copy is held in strongroom, Parliamentary library. Note on map says the town is to be surrounded by 1100 farms of 100 acres each. Note on map before copying states each blank square is 8 acres. Note on map before copying: Designed by Samuel Cobham, Newgate Street, where plans may be had. Description: Map, with cadastral and topographical information, showing the Church Missionary Society Mission Station at Paihia, circa 1835. Shows the site of an old whare paru mud hut on H William's property, W William's stone house, the chapel, WT Fairburn's house and carpenter's and smith's shops. Shows C Baker's home, and the first printing office beside a stone hut occupied by David (Rawiri) Taiwhanga about 1833 with his children Hill and Martin. Text on map mentions that Sunday school teacher Mr Joseph Matthews, and Hira and Matenga (Hill and Marsden). Shows bathing places in the Horotutu Creek, and further text mentions the site of New Zealand's the first game of cricket, Fairburn's trek across the sandbar to Motu Maire and shows outlying islands. Names Waitangi and Horotutu Beach. It is not conclusive whether or not Edwin Fairburn made this copy of the original map, or the orignal map itself. Description: An enlarged navigational chart of the Hau Ridi harbour entrance, now known as Napier, and the Hawke Bay, is the larger of the two maps. Details on the enlarged map include soundings and descriptions of shingle, low water areas, Martha Reef with references to the sinking of the Brig, Martha, and channels for boats going towards Taupo and Wai Tute Hari [sic], now known as Tutaekuri River and a sketch of a Maori settlement belonging to Ngati Te Whatuiapiti. The second map is of the coast from Hau Ridi to the area north of Tolaga Bay, and includes named islands, Young Nick's Head, Poverty Bay, and various features along the coast. Description: A hydrographic chart sketching the entrance of the Tauranga Harbour, depicting the path of the British Navy ship 'Fanny', around Mount Maunganui and Waikouwai, with full sounding information. Identifies fortified pa site named 'Tumaitai Pa', the accompanying diagram identifies six whare or houses and two storage huts. On the other side of the water, text reads 'the chief of this place anutra' (sic), text on water reads 'going to Tomonalap Pa'. Denotes several sentences of text on geographical features, hydrographic detail and information on safe entrance and exit to the harbour. Other Titles - Tauranga Text 'By Capt. Thomas Wing' (and underlined in signature style) added to map in black ink.
