Description: Shows view of Wanganui wharf, Christ Church, and Rutland Stockade, framed by cave entrance, with three Maori figures in the foreground. All have rifles in their posession, and are dressed wrapped in cloaks or blankets. Native foliage frames the mouth of the cave Impressed into the wooden frame on either side of the image: W E & F Newton, opticians & globemakers to the Queen, 3 Fleet St Temple Bar London Loosely based on Richard Taylor's 'Wanganui, NZ' (1848), at E-296-q-159, combined with the wood engraving in the Church Missionary Gleaner (1884, p. 83, a re-illustration of an 1850s view) 'The mission station at Wanganui, as seen from a natural cave in the rocks'. The Library also holds Wanganui and pier [?] from cave, New Zealand [185-?], published by W E & F Newton (Curios-021-007), showing the scene in a similar way, by an unknown artist. Description: A group of war canoes racing, some with sails. In the centre of the group is the missionary schooner, Karere, flying a red and blue ensign. A headland is in the background. Reprinted in the Quarterly papers of the Church Missionary Society in 1849. The image was also used to illustrate Rev. William Yate's 'An account of New Zealand' (London, 1835) opp. p. 184, with title The mission boat accompanying a New Zealand war expedition. Engraved by S. Williams. Description: A group of six red-coated soldiers (with part of a seventh on the far right) and one "friendly" Maori in the foreground, behind a low shelter, loading and shooting towards the extensive palisades of Hone Heke's pa at Ohaiawai. The palisades are shown with rifle holes continously along the base to enable firing from behind protection; the English soldiers and their companion, on the other hand, are having to raise their heads above their shelter to fire, with the exception of those on the far right, who are behind a Maori-style palisade. A collection of circular tents (and one rectangular tent at right), stands around a campfire in the foreground, with top of a larger tent visible in right foreground. A group of soldiers crouch behind camp fence in middle distance at left. Eight grass huts are close to the tent group at right, in front of hill topped by picket (group of British troops) which surveys the attack taking place in left background.
