Description: Includes rough diary entries describing his activities in Taranaki and Wanganui areas, with lists of names and various notes relating to land transactions and disputes. Much of this work related to his instructions to investigate the award by Land Claims Commissioner William Spain of 60,000 acres of land in this area to the New Zealand Company, and the areas that were disputed by tribal groups. In the middle of the volume is a schedule listing the numbers of Maori residing in the Wanganui area, indicating how many were baptised and unbaptised. Midway through the diary is a short, three-page, journal entry by the Reverend Richard Taylor, who accompanied McLean on an inland visit in January.
